Web-Based Physical Activity Interventions Are Feasible and Beneficial Solutions to Prevent Physical and Mental Health Declines in Community-Dwelling Older Adults During Isolation Periods

Jordan Granet et al.

Summary: Background Periods of prolonged lockdown increase the risk of physical inactivity, which can contribute to physical decline among older adults. Online technology could be an innovative solution to promote physical activity (PA) habits in this context. The goal of this study was to examine and compare the acceptability, feasibility, and potential benefits of 2 modalities of web-based PA interventions in older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown. Results showed that web-based PA interventions are feasible, acceptable, and beneficial for improving functional capacities and physical performance during periods of lockdown. However, the interactive web and live modalities appear to be more effective for promoting some of these outcomes than recorded and individual modalities.

Remote collection of physical performance measures for older people: a systematic review

Philip A. Heslop et al.

Summary: Remotely collected physical performance measures have the potential to improve inclusion of under-served groups in clinical research and enable research continuity during pandemics. However, it remains unclear whether remote collection is feasible and acceptable to older patients, and whether the results are comparable to face-to-face measures. A systematic review was conducted, including studies with participants aged 60 and above, and various physical performance assessments. The review found a lack of robust evidence on the acceptability, feasibility, and comparability of remote collection of physical performance measures.

Impacts of Remote Physical Exercises on Functional Status and Mobility among Community-Dwelling Pre-Disabled Seniors during the Covid-19 Lockdown

F. Buckinx et al.

Summary: Remote physical exercise interventions during the first Covid-19 lockdown helped maintain function, physical activities, basic mobility, and frailty status in pre-disabled seniors. Further studies are needed to identify parameters of remote exercise programs that can improve daily function and mobility in this population.

Online physical exercise intervention in older adults during lockdown: Can we improve the recipe?

J. Granet et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of prioritizing live or recorded sessions in online physical exercise intervention for older adults. The results showed that both groups had high levels of satisfaction and adherence, but the group with more live sessions had greater improvements in muscle power and endurance. Therefore, when designing online PE interventions, it is recommended to prioritize the number of live sessions.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impact of social determinants of health and health/clinical determinants on functional physical capacity in older adults. The results showed that age, gender, body mass index, and quality of life were predictive variables for walking capacity, while age and gender were predictive variables for handgrip strength.

Summary: The study found that fast walking speed, unipodal balance, normal walking speed, and normal Timed-Up and Go test were highly reliable in remote assessment conditions, while fast Timed-Up and Go test, Sit-to-Stand function, muscle endurance, and power were extremely reliable. In terms of absolute reliability, the standard error of measurement ranged from 15.54% to 5.14%. The minimal detectable change ranged from 43.07% to 14.21%.

Assessing Older Adults' Decision-Making Capacity for Independent Living: Practice Tensions and Complexities

Ruth Usher et al.

Summary: The issue of decision-making capacity (DMC) is important due to the growing elderly population and associated dementia-related diseases. Occupational therapists in Ireland have varying opinions on their contribution to the assessment of older adults' DMC for independent living. There is a lack of shared understanding and conflicting philosophies of practice, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. The research also highlights the exclusion of older people from care-planning and the determination of independent living options based on the availability of community services rather than their preferences.

The optimal cutoff score of the 2-min step test and its association with physical fitness in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Arunrat Srithawong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of the 2-min step test in predicting cardiorespiratory fitness in type 2 diabetes patients and explored its association with other physical fitness tests. The results showed that the number of steps in the 2-min step test was positively correlated with walking distance and leg strength, and negatively correlated with the time to perform the sit-to-stand test. The study also established the optimal cutoff score for the 2-min step test to predict cardiorespiratory fitness in type 2 diabetes patients.

Telehealth Use in Geriatrics Care during the COVID-19 Pandemic-A Scoping Review and Evidence Synthesis

Sathyanarayanan Doraiswamy et al.

Summary: Telehealth in geriatric care shows strengths in convenience and affordability, weaknesses in meeting specific physical and cognitive limitations, threats of inequity and lack of standardization, and opportunities in technologic advancements driven by simplicity and user-friendliness for older people. Optimizing telehealth services for older people requires greater government investments and active engagement by a broader participation of stakeholders.

Summary: The study found that one-leg standing time had the highest rate of age-related decline in both men and women, indicating a need for balance, muscle function, and walking training. Men showed a high rate of decline in trunk forward bending, while women exhibited declines in forced expiratory volume and bone mineral density, highlighting the importance of early intervention for flexibility in men and respiratory function and continued intervention for bone health in women.
