Real-time capable modelling approach of an innovative flow forming process for the property-controlled manufacturing of graded parts

Lukas Kersting et al.

Summary: The automated and resource-efficient production of high-strength lightweight components is becoming more important in industries such as aircraft or vehicle construction. The conventional flow-forming process has limitations in terms of reproducibility and producing parts with well-defined material property distributions. A novel closed-loop property control system that manipulates the tool path of the flow forming actuator based on online property measurement during the process could enhance the manufacturing process. This paper presents a control system model for the flow-forming process of metastable austenitic stainless steel.

Process Window and Repeatability of Thermomechanical Tangential Ring Rolling

Remi Lafarge et al.

Summary: International objectives for resource and energy efficiency necessitate new manufacturing processes, like the proposed thermomechanical tangential profiled ring rolling process, which combines rapid cooling and cold forming into a single step. This reduction in process steps and heating cycles offers improved energy efficiency compared to traditional methods. Through a series of experiments, this paper demonstrates the potential of the new process in terms of achievable hardness and microstructure, with the cooling system and rolling feed identified as essential factors. Furthermore, the repeatability of the process is analyzed, and potential disturbances are identified and ranked.

Temperature control for thermomechanical ring rolling

Remi Lafarge et al.

Summary: Thermomechanical tangential profiled ring rolling enables the manufacturing of ring shaped parts with specified geometry and hardness in one step. Controlling the cooling rate of the ring using supplementary cooling with compressed air is crucial for achieving acceptable reproducibility. This study demonstrates the possibility of temperature control using closed loop control and implements a controlled system model to determine PID parameters, showing improvement in process repeatability.

STABILIZATION OF A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL SYSTEM OF HYPERBOLIC BALANCE LAWS

Michael Herty et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the feedback stabilization problem for systems described by Hamilton-Jacobi type equations in R-n. By reformulating the problem, a stabilization problem for a multi-dimensional system of n hyperbolic partial differential equations is obtained. Using a novel Lyapunov function that takes into account the multi-dimensional geometry, we prove the stabilization of the resulting system in L(2) through suitable feedback control. We also provide examples based on the forming process to illustrate such systems.

Soft sensor for content prediction in an integrated continuous pharmaceutical formulation line based on the residence time distribution of unit operations

Martin Gyurkes et al.

Summary: In this study, a concentration predicting soft sensor was developed based on the Residence Time Distribution (RTD) of a pharmaceutical formulation line. The RTD was investigated using color-based tracer experiments with image analysis. The study also demonstrated the feasibility of coupling unit operations in silico. The soft sensor showed accurate predictions compared to validation experiments, proving its adequacy.

Soft sensor based on localized semi-supervised relevance vector machine for penicillin fermentation process with asymmetric data

Kepeng Qiu et al.

Summary: Due to operating conditions and instrument performance, batch process data often exhibit asymmetric characteristics, posing challenges for developing soft sensor models. These challenges include limited labeled data and the lack of an effective similarity evaluation for unlabeled data with multiphase characteristics. To address these challenges, a localized semi-supervised relevance vector machine-based soft sensor is proposed for multiphase batch processes with asymmetric data.

A nonlinear process monitoring strategy for a Metal Forming process

Ashish Kumar et al.

Summary: The article discusses the development of a nonlinear statistical process monitoring strategy for a metal forming process using Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA). The strategy effectively addresses the issue of inherent nonlinearity among the measured characteristics and achieves fault detection. The application of the strategy on a Rolling Mill Unit (RMU) demonstrates its efficiency.

Eddy Current Sensor System for Tilting Independent In-Process Measurement of Magnetic Anisotropy

Frank Wendler et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel eddy current sensor system for non-contact measurement of the magnetic anisotropy of a workpiece, enabling separation and correction of tilting effects. The measurement principle is demonstrated with two samples of different magnetic anisotropy values induced by cold forming and analyzed under different tilt angles. Additionally, digital signal processing is used to differentiate the effects of tilt and anisotropy based on the acquired raw data.
