Time-Resolved Statistics of Snippets as General Framework for Model-Free Entropy Estimators

Jann van der Meer et al.

Summary: Irreversibility is quantified by entropy production, which can be estimated through measuring antisymmetric observables like current. A general framework is introduced to infer a lower bound on entropy production by measuring time-resolved statistics of events with any symmetry under time reversal, including time-symmetric instantaneous events. Markovianity is emphasized as a property of certain events rather than the full system, and an operationally accessible criterion for this weakened Markov property is introduced. The approach is based on snippets, which are particular sections of trajectories between two Markovian events, and a generalized detailed balance relation is discussed.

Revealing the Nonequilibrium Nature of a Granular Intruder: The Crucial Role of Non-Gaussian Behavior

D. Lucente et al.

Summary: This study presents experimental observations of significant differences between the rotator's angular velocity in an out-of-equilibrium process and the equilibrium process. A new model is proposed, incorporating both Gaussian and Poissonian noise, which successfully reproduces the experimental results at different densities. This research provides a more consistent and meaningful framework for the treatment of out-of-equilibrium and dissipative systems.

Mechanism for giant enhancement of transport induced by active fluctuations

K. Bialas et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of active fluctuations, which are inherently nonequilibrium, is both a hot topic and a major challenge in physics. This opens up a new landscape of phenomena that are absent when only thermal fluctuations are present. Recent studies have shown that the transport of free particles induced by white Poisson shot noise can be significantly enhanced when subjected to a periodic potential. This research extends the original predictions, investigates the impact of active noise statistics, and explains the mechanisms for the enhancement of free-particle transport.

Thermodynamic bounds for diffusion in nonequilibrium systems with multiple timescales

A. Plati et al.

Summary: We propose a thermodynamic uncertainty relation that constrains the average squared displacement of a Gaussian process with memory under the influence of unbalanced thermal baths and/or external forces. Our bound is more rigorous than previous results and is applicable at finite times. We verify our findings using experimental and numerical data from a vibrofluidized granular medium, which exhibits anomalous diffusion behavior. Our relation has the ability to discern between equilibrium and nonequilibrium dynamics in certain cases, which is challenging for Gaussian processes.

Time-translational symmetry in statistical dynamics dictates Einstein relation, Green-Kubo formula, and their generalizations

Ying-Jen Yang et al.

Summary: A stochastic dynamics consists of a drift and a martingale increment, representing the mean rate of change and randomness, respectively. These two components, although statistically uncorrelated, contribute to the overall fluctuations of the dynamics, capturing uncertainties in the past and future. We demonstrate that fluctuation-dissipation relations like the Einstein relation and the Green-Kubo formula can be formulated for any stochastic process with a steady state, without assuming the process to be Markovian, reversible, or linear. Furthermore, we show that reversibility in equilibrium leads to an additional symmetry in the covariance between the system's state and drift. Potential directions for generalizing these results to processes without steady states are briefly discussed.

What to Learn from a Few Visible Transitions' Statistics?

Pedro E. Harunari et al.

Summary: Interpreting partial information collected from systems subject to noise is a key problem in scientific disciplines. In this paper, we consider an observer who records transitions performed by a system and investigate how to use these transitions' information to infer dynamical, thermodynamical, and biochemical properties. We derive analytical expressions for probabilities of consecutive transitions and the time elapsed between them, as well as a lower bound for the entropy production rate. We also verify our results with numerical simulations and apply the framework to biophysical models and a polymerization model.

Thermodynamic Inference in Partially Accessible Markov Networks: A Unifying Perspective from Transition-Based Waiting Time Distributions

Jann van der Meer et al.

Summary: This work investigates the waiting time distributions between consecutive transitions in a partially observable Markov network. An entropy estimator is formulated using the ratios of waiting time distributions to quantify irreversibility. Depending on the complexity of the underlying network, criteria are formulated to infer whether the entropy estimator recovers the full physical entropy production or provides a lower bound. Additionally, estimators for the network topology are derived using an equivalent semi-Markov description. The study provides a unifying mathematical framework for entropy estimators and clarifies the meaning of formal versus physical irreversibility.

Inference of time irreversibility from incomplete information: Linear systems and its pitfalls

D. Lucente et al.

Summary: Data and theoretical arguments are crucial for modeling physical systems, but estimating the distance from equilibrium based on series of scalar data with Gaussian statistics is generally problematic. This difficulty also arises when dealing with time-correlated data.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity for Levy processes in harmonic traps

Marco Baldovin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the problem of finding shortcuts to adiabaticity for particles in an external potential governed by Levy stochastic processes. The authors propose an inverse-engineering approach and derive exact equations for the relevant characteristic functions in Fourier space, providing analytical solutions for the broader class of Levy stochastic processes.

Improved bounds on entropy production in living systems

Dominic J. Skinner et al.

Summary: Living systems defy the second law of thermodynamics to maintain or increase local order by consuming free energy, thus increasing the net entropy of their environment. By reformulating the problem within an optimization framework, improved bounds on the rate of entropy production can be inferred from partial measurements of biological systems. This approach provides provably optimal estimates and reveals non-zero entropy production rates even in seemingly time-symmetric processes that obey detailed balance.
