Optimization of extraction process of Dioscorea nipponica Makino saponins and their UPLC-QTOF-MS profiling, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti- inflammatory activities

Yu Chang et al.

Summary: This study extensively evaluated the extraction process, major components, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities of total saponins extraction from Dioscorea nipponica Makino. The results showed that the extract exhibited mild antibacterial and antioxidant activities and demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity in LPS induced cells, providing a theoretical basis for the development of new anti-inflammatory Chinese medicine.

Spectrophotometric Methods for Measurement of Antioxidant Activity in Food and Pharmaceuticals

Marios C. Christodoulou et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been growing interest in the application of antioxidants in food and pharmaceuticals due to their beneficial health effects against oxidative-related diseases. Various assays, including hydrogen atom transfer, single electron transfer, and scavenging activities, can measure the antioxidant potential. Understanding the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of different methods is crucial for selecting appropriate techniques for assessing antioxidant activity. Among the analytical techniques available, spectrophotometric methods are the most common due to their sensitivity, rapidness, low cost, and reproducibility. This review covers the mechanisms, color changes, advantages, and limitations of spectrophotometric methods.

Vine Pruning-Derived Biochar for Agronomic Benefits

Diana Egri et al.

Summary: The agronomic benefits of biochar prepared from vine pruning residues were evaluated in this study. The results showed that strongly alkaline biochar had a significant positive effect on the growth of bell pepper plants in strongly acidic soil, while it had no favorable effect on plants in slightly alkaline and slightly acidic soil.

Ultrasound Assisted Extraction of Saponins from Hedera helix L. and an In Vitro Biocompatibility Evaluation of the Extracts

Adina Gavrila et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for ultrasound assisted extraction of saponins from Hedera helix L. leaves and evaluate the in vitro biocompatibility of the richest saponin extracts. The study found that the best extraction conditions were a temperature of 50 degrees C, an ultrasound amplitude of 40%, an extraction time of 60 min, a plant material to solvent ratio of 1:20 (w:v), and 80% ethanol as solvent. The extracts were cytocompatible with L929 fibroblast cell lines at concentrations below 200 μg/mL after 48 h of treatment.

Estimation of the influence of the environmental factors on the accumulation of phytochemicals and antioxidant capacity in the ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.)

Ivan Bezruk et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of environmental factors on the accumulation of various components in Ivy leaves from different European countries. The results showed that samples from northern countries had higher amounts of phytochemicals. Among all studied parameters, the duration of sunshine, soil, and climate had the most significant influence on the accumulation of components in ivy raw materials.

Systematic Investigation of the Effects of Seven Plant Extracts on the Physiological Parameters, Yield, and Nutritional Quality of Radish (Raphanus sativus var. sativus)

Katarzyna Godlewska et al.

Summary: The modern agricultural sector is facing the challenge of meeting the needs of a growing global population in a high-yielding and sustainable manner. This study examined the impact of botanical extracts on radish plants and found that foliar applications of plant-based biostimulants led to increased growth and physiological parameters. Extracts from common dandelion, valerian, and giant goldenrod showed the most beneficial effects on radish plants in terms of physiological and biochemical properties.
