Development of a thermal excitation source used in an active thermographic UAV platform

Shakeb Deane et al.

Summary: This work aims to assess the effectiveness of using active infrared thermography (IRT) onboard a UAV platform. It addresses challenges such as interference and identifies optimal distances and time requirements for UAV inspection using IRT. The study demonstrates that UAVs can successfully carry the necessary equipment for locating hard-to-reach defects.

Application of Air-Coupled Ground Penetrating Radar Based on F-K Filtering and BP Migration in High-Speed Railway Tunnel Detection

Yang Lei et al.

Summary: With the increase of high-speed railway tunnels in China, defects in tunnel linings such as insufficient thickness, voids, and poor compaction have become more common and threaten train operation safety. To address this problem, a detection method based on vehicle-mounted air-coupled GPR is proposed. The study introduces F-K filtering and BP migration algorithms based on practical considerations, which are shown to suppress clutter and enhance the internal signal prominence of the lining. Experimental results and verification confirm that air-coupled GPR can meet the requirements of high-speed railway tunnel lining inspections. A comprehensive GPR detection model is proposed to lay the groundwork for defect census in high-speed railway tunnels.

Integration of Remote-Sensing Techniques for the Preventive Conservation of Paleolithic Cave Art in the Karst of the Altamira Cave

Vicente Bayarri et al.

Summary: Rock art, made with mineral and organic substances, provides evidence of our ancient past. While it is fragile, measures must be taken to preserve it as a valuable cultural heritage. Remote-sensing technologies and GIS can help generate detailed documentation of caves and their environment, assisting in the research and conservation of cave art.

Evaluating the joint use of GPR and ERT on mapping shallow subsurface features of karst critical zone in southwest China

Min Tao et al.

Summary: The soils and underlying weathered carbonate rock in karstic regions are crucial for water and nutrient infiltration, storage, and retention. The combination of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) improves the delineation of the shallow subsurface structure in karst areas, despite limitations of individual techniques.

Timely and Low-Cost Remote Sensing Practices for the Assessment of Landslide Activity in the Service of Hazard Management

Aggeliki Kyriou et al.

Summary: This study utilized UAV and TLS technology to collect multi-dated data for landslide monitoring. The results showed that the landslide remains active but progresses slowly. Point clouds from both UAV and TLS sensors can be effectively used for landslide monitoring, with TLS point clouds being denser and more suitable.

Integrated GPR and Laser Vibration Surveys to Preserve Prehistorical Painted Caves: Cueva Pintada Case Study

J. O. Caselles et al.

Summary: The study of structural safety under important paintings requires careful non-destructive analysis. The case of Cueva Pintada, dug in volcanic tuff, presents challenges in conservation and sensitivity to vibrations. Noninvasive methodologies like ground-penetrating radar and passive seismic surveys provide valuable data for determining the cave's state of conservation.
