Measurement of Volatile Fatty Acids in Silage through Odors with Nanomechanical Sensors

Kosuke Minami et al.

Summary: The measurement of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is important in food and agriculture, but most methods require specific equipment, making on-site measurements difficult. This study demonstrates the measurement of VFAs in silage using nanomechanical sensors-Membrane-type Surface stress Sensors (MSS). By extracting features from the decay curves of the sensing response, VFAs can be efficiently measured with discrimination of the silage samples. This sensing system has great potential for practical applications including on-site measurements, as it does not require expensive equipment and sample pre-treatment.
