PLGA/Gelatin-based electrospun nanofiber scaffold encapsulating antibacterial and antioxidant molecules for accelerated tissue regeneration

Gufran Ajmal et al.

Summary: We developed ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and quercetin encapsulated PLGA/Gelatin based electrospun nanofibers for the treatment of full-thickness or hard-to-heal wounds. The nanofibers exhibited high drugs entrapment with a bi-phasic sustained release profile. They also showed antioxidant and antibacterial properties, as well as biocompatibility. In vivo studies in Wistar rats demonstrated accelerated healing and complete re-epithelialization within 16 days. These findings suggest the potential use of these nanofibers as a dressing material for full-thickness wounds.

Hexafluoroisopropanol based silk fibroin coatings on AZ31 biometals with enhanced adhesion, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility

Haotong Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of silk fibroin coating on biomedical magnesium alloys. The authors demonstrate that using hexafluoroisopropanol as a solvent and applying ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether for stabilization can improve the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the coating. The results show that the HFIP-based silk fibroin coating exhibits better compactness and adhesion strength compared to aqueous-based silk fibroin coating, and also demonstrates significantly enhanced corrosion resistance.

Dermal Fibroblast Migration and Proliferation Upon Wounding or Lipopolysaccharide Exposure is Mediated by Stathmin

Ruiyan Cen et al.

Summary: This study reveals an important role of stathmin in the migration and proliferation of dermal fibroblasts. Stathmin is shown to increase with p38/MAPK pathway activation in response to lipopolysaccharide stimulation, resulting in microtubule depolymerization and increased migration and proliferation of dermal fibroblasts. Targeting stathmin or the p38/MAPK pathway could be a potential strategy for clinical interventions in wound healing.

Gelatin-based electrospun and lyophilized scaffolds with nano scale feature for bone tissue engineering application: review

Yogendra Pratap Singh et al.

Summary: The rebuilding of damaged human bone tissue is an important objective in bone tissue engineering. Fabricated scaffolds, which mimic the native extracellular matrix of bone, are used as artificial supports and materials for regeneration of new bone tissues. Gelatin, a potential candidate, can be blended with other polymers or composites to enhance its performance as a bone graft. Freeze-drying and electrospinning are popular techniques for scaffold fabrication, providing a unique architecture with desired porosity and pore interconnectivity. These scaffolds resemble the natural bone extracellular matrix and have applications in bone tissue engineering.

A Polycaprolactone (PCL)-Supported Electrocompacted Aligned Collagen Type-I Patch for Annulus Fibrosus Repair and Regeneration

Ankush Dewle et al.

Summary: Degeneration of the intervertebral disc often leads to disc herniation and low back pain, posing challenges for tissue engineering in developing effective therapeutic strategies for AF regeneration. A novel biomaterial, A-PCL-NH2+Col-I, was created to support the proliferation of AF cells and enhance the production of collagen type-I and glycosaminoglycan extracellular matrix. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using this aligned polycaprolactone-supported electrocompacted type-I collagen hydrogel as an alternative for repairing and regenerating AF fissures in degenerated IVD.
