Differences in Pore Type and Pore Structure between Silurian Longmaxi Marine Shale and Jurassic Dongyuemiao Lacustrine Shale and Their Influence on Shale-Gas Enrichment

Pengwei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper systematically compares the pore characteristics of the Longmaxi shale and Dongyuemiao shale in the Sichuan Basin, West China. The results show that the two shales have different pore types and structures, with the Longmaxi shale dominated by organic pores and the Dongyuemiao shale primarily composed of clay-mineral pores. These findings are important for shale gas exploration.

Paleoenvironment-driven organic matter accumulation in lacustrine shale mixed with shell bioclasts: A case study from the Jurassic Da'anzhai member, Sichuan Basin (China)

Wenzhi Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the organic matter enrichment in the lacustrine calcareous shale of the Jurassic Da'anzhai Member in the Sichuan Basin. Results revealed the mass death event of benthic organisms in the paleolakes and the influence of sedimentation rates and sinking influxes of particulate organic carbon on organic matter accumulation. The organic matter enrichment was observed under both oxygenated and oxygen-deficient conditions.

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in South Sichuan Basin, it is found that the development of organic matter pores can affect the formation of high-quality shale gas reservoirs, and the contents of carbonate and clay minerals are negatively correlated with reservoir quality.

Diagenesis and Pore Formation Evolution of Continental Shale in the Da'anzhai Lower Jurassic Section in the Sichuan Basin

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: This study identified the characteristics of organic and inorganic pore types in continental shale and clarified the influence of diagenesis on pore development. The results showed that organic matter pores and various types of inorganic pores are developed in continental shale, and their characteristics are affected by burial depth. The burial depth is the main controlling factor for pore development and microfractures in continental shale reservoirs.

Siliceous Origin of the Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation Shale in the Middle Part of the Upper Yangtze Platform: Significance of Organic Matter Enrichment

Xiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and evaluated the shale of the Qiongzhusi Formation in the central region of the Sichuan Basin using various techniques. It identified four types of quartz in the shale and found that the content of authigenic quartz decreases from top to bottom while terrigenous detrital quartz increases. Biogenic silicon is the major component of authigenic quartz. The study also highlighted the positive impact of authigenic quartz on the pore structure of shale and its role in the enrichment and preservation of organic matter.

Theory and practice of unconventional gas exploration in carrier beds: Insight from the breakthrough of new type of shale gas and tight gas in Sichuan Basin, SW China

Tonglou Guo et al.

Summary: Unconventional gas in the Sichuan Basin mainly consists of shale gas and tight gas. Significant breakthroughs have been made in the exploration and development of silt shale in the Qiongzhusi Formation and difficult-to-produce tight sandstone gas reserves in the Xujiahe Formation. This has led to a transformation in the exploration and development of shale gas from a single-layer system to a multi-layer system and the enhancement of the potential for tight sandstone gas in the Sichuan Basin.

Study on the Pore Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Different Lithofacies of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation Shale in Southern Sichuan Basin, China

Chao Qian et al.

Summary: Gas content and flow characteristics in shale are closely related to shale lithofacies, which exhibit significant differences in pore structure and fractal characteristics. This study systematically characterized the pore attributes of marine Wufeng-Longmaxi formation shales using various techniques. The results showed that siliceous shales have the largest surface porosity, pore volume, and specific surface area, while mixed shales have the most complex pore structure. The lithofacies variation has a significant impact on specific surface area, but a minor effect on pore volume.

Shale lithofacies controls on porosity and pore structure: An example from Ordovician Goldwyer Formation, Canning Basin, Western Australia

Muhammad Atif Iqbal et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the shale reservoirs in the Ordovician Goldwyer Formation of the Canning Basin in Western Australia. Different lithofacies within the Goldwyer shale exhibit varying porosity levels, with organic-rich and siliceous shales being the most essential types for fluid flow due to their high porosity. The study suggests that organic content and clay content are the main controlling factors for the pore structure of the Goldwyer shale.

Geological Characteristics of Shale Gas in Different Strata of Marine Facies in South China

Yufang Wang et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the well-developed marine shale strata in the Middle and Upper Yangtze region of South China, with Wufeng Longmaxi shale gas being the only one developed on a large scale currently. The Sinian and Cambrian shale gases are still in the exploration stage. The different shale strata show varying characteristics in lithological features, influenced by tectonic patterns, sedimentary environments, and diagenesis caused by tectonic subsidence. This will have an impact on fracturing technology and effectiveness in the future.

Maturity evolution of Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation shale of the Sichuan Basin

Qiu Nansheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the thermal history and denudation data of the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation source rocks in the Sichuan Basin, leading to the identification of different maturity evolution patterns and key hydrocarbon generation stages in various tectonic units. The main factors controlling the thermal maturity and evolution models are determined to be tectonic and sedimentary burial during the Late Permian, with the thermal maturity of the formation depending on the thermal history and maximum burial depth before uplift in the Late Cretaceous. The study provides new insights into the source rock evolution and shale gas potential in the Lower Paleozoic.

Formation, preservation and connectivity control of organic pores in shale

Tenger Borjigin et al.

Summary: Organic pore development is controlled by the type, maturity, and decomposition of organic matter, while the preservation of organic pores is influenced by maturity and diagenesis. The connectivity of pores depends on the abundance and distribution of organic matter. Different types of shale have varying characteristics in the formation and connection of organic pores, grain margin fractures, and bedding fractures.
