Assessment of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) as a food ingredient and putative therapeutic agent

George A. Burdock

Summary: The food ingredient Nigella sativa L., also known as black cumin or black caraway, has a long history of use in Middle- and Far-Eastern cultures. The seed and its extracts have been reported as a successful therapeutic agent, with the presence of thymoquinone being attributed to its effectiveness. However, the quantitative analysis of the seed yields variable results, which can be due to various factors. Despite this variability, many studies have shown positive outcomes in toxicity testing and clinical trials. Some allergic reactions have been reported when N. sativa extracts are applied to the skin. Nevertheless, when consumed at historical levels and as traditionally practiced, N. sativa seeds are considered safe.
