Prevalence and prognostic importance of malnutrition, as assessed by four different scoring systems, in elder patients with heart failure

Lin Liang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, associations, and prognostic significance of malnutrition among elder patients with heart failure (HF). The study found that malnutrition was common among elder patients with HF and was associated with increased mortality risk. Among the nutritional scoring systems studied, the CONUT score was most effective in predicting mortality risk.

Hospital-acquired disability in older heart failure patients decreases independence and increases difficulties in activities of daily living

Shinji Nemoto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether hospitalization in older patients with heart failure (HF) leads to a worsening of independence in activities of daily living (ADL) and difficulties in ADL, and whether these difficulties can predict readmission for HF. The results showed that hospitalization triggered a decline in independence and an increase in difficulties in ADL in older HF patients, and these difficulties were relevant factors for the risk of readmission.

Association Between Changes in Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Parameter and the Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Acute Heart Failure

Kyu-Sun Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic implication of serial measurement of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure (HF). The results showed that the change of the edema index measured by BIA during hospitalization was significantly correlated with poor outcomes in HF patients. BIA was found to be a noninvasive and effective method for evaluating volume status during HF hospitalization.

Global burden of heart failure: a comprehensive and updated review of epidemiology

Gianluigi Savarese et al.

Summary: Heart Failure (HF) is a multi-faceted and life-threatening syndrome with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting over 64 million people. While the incidence of HF has stabilized in industrialized countries, the prevalence is increasing due to population ageing and improved treatment. Developing countries lack substantial data on HF epidemiology, which shows different features compared to the Western world. This review provides updated estimates on global burden of HF including prevalence, incidence, outcomes, and costs.

What is the optimal nutritional assessment tool for predicting decline in the activity of daily living among older patients with heart failure?

Summary: Nutritional management plays a crucial role in the daily activities of older inpatients with heart failure. This study identified the CONUT index as an accurate tool for predicting ADL decline in these patients.

Prognostic values of muscle mass assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis in older patients with heart failure

Summary: The study compared the measurement of skeletal muscle mass in elderly heart failure patients using BIA and DEXA, finding significant discordance in defining low MM. DEXA-defined low MM provided additional prognostic value, predicting poor outcomes in these patients.

Summary: This study examined the impact of BMI on hospital-associated disability (HAD) and hospitalization costs for acute heart failure in Japan. The findings showed that lower BMI was associated with higher incidence of HAD, and both lower and higher BMI were associated with increased hospitalization costs.

Summary: The study revealed that hospitalization-associated muscle weakness was significantly associated with functional decline in the oldest old hospitalized patients, along with other factors such as body mass index and pressure sore risk. Further interventional studies are needed to investigate the causal relationship between hospitalization-associated muscle weakness and clinical outcomes.

Summary: In elderly patients with HF, major and moderate risk GNRI is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, while the low risk GNRI group predicts all-cause mortality. The relationship between GNRI and HF may vary based on the subtype of heart failure.
