High hydrostatic pressure harnesses the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites via the regulation of polyketide synthesis genes of hadal sediment-derived fungi

Ludan Deng et al.

Summary: Deep-sea fungi from the Mariana Trench were isolated and identified, with Aspergillus sydowii SYX6 showing excellent piezo-tolerance and bioactive compound production. High hydrostatic pressure affected the growth and sporulation of the fungus, and the bioactive compound diorcinol was purified and characterized. The expression of the biosynthetic gene associated with diorcinol production was regulated by high pressure.

How different are marine microbial natural products compared to their terrestrial counterparts?

Tanja M. Voser et al.

Summary: The majority of marine microorganism natural products are closely related to those isolated from terrestrial microbes, with only a small percentage being unique. Focusing on marine specific and understudied microbial phyla increases the likelihood of discovering unique marine natural compounds.

Mining and unearthing hidden biosynthetic potential

Kirstin Scherlach et al.

Summary: Genetically encoded small molecules play key roles in ecological interactions and drug discovery, but are often difficult to detect due to low production and high rediscovery rates. Genome mining for biosynthetic gene clusters can help address these limitations, leading to the discovery of previously overlooked natural products.

High hydrostatic pressure shapes the development and production of secondary metabolites of Mariana Trench sediment fungi

Qingqing Peng et al.

Summary: The hadal biosphere remains one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth, with recent studies revealing diverse and active fungal communities in hadal sediment. Research on these fungi is limited, but they have shown good growth and potential for secondary metabolite production under high hydrostatic pressure.
