Quantifying the impact of frost damage during flowering on apple yield in Shaanxi province, China

Renwei Chen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impacts of frost damage during flowering on apple yield in Shaanxi province, China using the STICS model and statistical methods. The results showed that frost occurrences and intensities were highest in the recent ten years, leading to average yield losses of 6.35-29.27%.

Low temperature response index for monitoring freezing injury of tea plant

Yilin Mao et al.

Summary: This study established a prediction model for the degree of low temperature stress in tea plants using the low temperature response index (LTRI) and seven indicators. The LTRI-UVE-CNN model showed the best prediction performance for the seven indicators, indicating its potential for assessing low temperature stress in tea plants.

Silver lining to a climate crisis in multiple prospects for alleviating crop waterlogging under future climates

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events pose a threat to food security, especially due to crop waterlogging, but there is a lack of global assessments on its impacts. This study develops a paradigm that identifies common stress patterns caused by waterlogging and uses a farming systems model to understand future changes. The findings suggest that yield penalties caused by waterlogging will increase in the future, but adaptations such as altering sowing time and using waterlogging-tolerant genotypes can help mitigate the losses.

Machine learning-based detection of frost events in wheat plants from infrared thermography

Sayma Shammi et al.

Summary: Current frost damage assessment techniques reliant on traditional data and manual inspection can be erroneous, labour-intensive, and lead to delayed decisions. This study explores a new technique using machine learning models trained on infrared thermal images to automatically detect freezing stages in on-field plants. Results show that the random forest model can detect frost events with the highest classification speed.

Satellite-Based Frost Damage Detection in Support of Winter Cover Crops Management: A Case Study on White Mustard

Mara Gabbrielli et al.

Summary: This study successfully detected frost damage in four white mustard fields in Northern Italy using Sentinel-2 vegetation indices. By quantifying and mapping frost damage, the efficiency of cover crop winterkill termination was assessed. The results showed that MMSR outperformed other indices, followed by CCCI and EVI, and the maps of frost damage were consistent with observed spatial variation.

Narrow-waveband spectral indices for prediction of yield loss in frost-damaged winter wheat during stem elongation

Yongfeng Wu et al.

Summary: Frost during stem elongation is highly destructive in China and affects winter wheat production. Hyperspectral techniques show great potential in predicting Percent Yield Difference (PYD) of frost-damaged winter wheat. Water-sensitive spectral indices demonstrate the best prediction accuracy for PYD, outperforming PLSR and SVR models.

A new framework to quantify maize production risk from chilling injury in Northeast China

Ziyue Li et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new framework that successfully quantifies maize production risk by analyzing chilling risks and developing composite indices. Results showed that composite index insurance outperformed single index insurance in quantifying yield losses. This framework is expected to help insurance companies rapidly estimate yield losses and design more promising products.

Risk assessment of possible impacts of climate change and irrigation on wheat yield and quality with a modified CERES-Wheat model

Jianchao Liu

Summary: This study utilized a modified quality model to simulate the impacts of climate change, environment, and management on wheat yield and quality, with a focus on Northwest China. Using climate change scenarios and risk assessment, the research found varying risks to wheat yield and grain protein concentration in different climatic regions. The study highlights the importance of tailored irrigation strategies for combating climate change effects on crop production.

Risk assessment of freezing injury during overwintering of wheat in the northern boundary of the Winter Wheat Region in China

Jiahui Guo et al.

Summary: This study formulated the freezing injury index (FII) for winter wheat in Zunhua, China, based on historical meteorological data and cold resistance identification data. The FII showed a significant linear correlation with the dead tiller rate of wheat and an downward trend in interannual variation. The study revealed two cycles of freezing injury in 60 years, indicating a high risk in the short term.
