A variationist perspective on the comparative complexity of four registers at the intersection of mode and formality

Summary: This study examines the probabilistic complexity differences between different registers by analyzing richly annotated datasets in English and Dutch. The findings show that formal registers are the most complex, while spoken registers are the least complex. Written formal quality newspaper writing is the most complex register under study.

Variable grammars are variable across registers: future temporal reference in English

Summary: This article investigates register differences in future temporal reference (FTR) variation in English through a variationist corpus study and a supplementary rating experiment. The results show that register modulates the effect of internal constraints, indicating considerable variation in variable grammars across registers. The experiment confirms the sensitivity and awareness of language users to the register-specificity of variation. The findings have important implications for variationist sociolinguistics and for variational linguistics in general.
