Expert judgments versus publication-based metrics: do the two methods produce identical results in measuring academic reputation?

Katerina Guba et al.

Summary: This study assesses the validity of citation metrics by comparing them with expert judgments obtained through a survey of Russian sociologists. The findings suggest that citation metrics can accurately predict the most influential sociologists. This study contributes to the research on the validity of citation metrics and provides a national bibliometric data source that is important for non-Western higher education systems.

Predictable by publication: discovery of early highly cited academic papers based on their own features

Xiaobo Tang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for predicting early highly cited papers based on their own features. By analyzing academic papers published in the ACM journal from 2000 to 2013 and extracting five types of features, the authors applied various prediction models and successfully predicted highly cited papers 1-3 years after publication.

Impact of field of study (FoS) on authors' citation trend

Lubna Zafar et al.

Summary: A significant aspect in scientific research is evaluating the impact of scientific contribution of an author. Authors select a particular Field of Study (FoS) to work in, based on their interest and/or by considering the currently hot topics. One aspect that may support in the selection of their research area is the future impact of their work.

Measuring the influence of non-scientific features on citations

Stefano Mammola et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the impact of non-scientific factors on citation counts. The results showed that article length, number of authors, author experience and collaboration network, impact factors, open access availability, online sharing, referencing practice, and number of figures all had a positive influence on citation counts. These patterns were consistent across most disciplines, with trends indicating an increasing effect of journal impact factors and number of authors on citations.

Does early publishing in top journals really predict long-term scientific success in the business field?

Li Hou et al.

Summary: This study explores whether early publishing in top journals is an effective way to recognize scientists who will have better academic performance in their careers, using the business field as an example. Researchers who published in top journals early in their careers indeed performed better subsequently, compared to those without top journal publications.

An in-text citation classification predictive model for a scholarly search system

Naif Radi Aljohani et al.

Summary: Citations in scholarly documents do not always have equivalent functions or importance. By using machine learning models and feature engineering, researchers were able to classify and predict the importance of citations in academic literature. The Random Forest model showed superior performance in predicting citation importance compared to other models.

Impact of the reference list features on the number of citations

Stefano Mammola et al.

Summary: Recent papers tend to cite more high Impact Factor papers, while highly cited articles in ecology have longer reference lists, include more self-citations, and cite recent and impactful references. The proportion of 'classic' papers and non-journal publications cited, as well as the temporal span of the reference list, do not significantly influence articles' citations.
