The Belt and Road Initiative as a variegated agglomeration of multi-scalar state spatial strategies

Alexander L. Q. Chen

Summary: This study makes two contributions by developing the conceptual innovation of 'variegated agglomeration of multi-scalar state spatial strategies' and utilizing the methodological angles of multi-scalar analysis to theorize the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Using the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) and the China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor (CICPEC) as a case study, the research reveals that the CICPEC is the result of spatial layering of competing and complementary state spatial strategies, which is path-dependent on the GMS. This study deepens our understanding of the BRI and the Chinese political economy through the analytical lens of multi-scalar analysis.

Beyond Industry 4.0: B2B factory networks as an alternative path towards the digital transformation of manufacturing and work

Florian Butollo et al.

Summary: This article revisits the concept of flexible specialization through theoretical and empirical research on digitalized manufacturing, criticizing the one-sidedness of the Industry 4.0 discourse. It contrasts these findings with empirical evidence on platform-mediated business-to-business factory networks, which show that flexibility is achieved through digital interconnection of small-scale manufacturers rather than through advanced production technology. The impact on work is ambiguous, with potential for both improving skills and craftsmanship in small-scale manufacturing, as well as fostering cutthroat competition in price-sensitive industries.

Getting the territory right: infrastructure-led development and the re-emergence of spatial planning strategies

Seth Schindler et al.

Summary: This paper argues that infrastructure-led development is an emergent international development regime with a focus on proper territorial planning. Large-scale infrastructure projects link resource frontiers and subnational urban systems, forming spatially articulated value chains that facilitate resource extraction, logistical integration, and industrial production.
