Poly(acrylic acid)-Assisted Intrafibrillar Mineralization of Type I Collagen: A Review

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: This review discusses the function and mechanism of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in regulating the mineralization of collagen, particularly intrafibrillar mineralization (IM). The differences between two mineralization patterns (extrafibrillar and intrafibrillar) in terms of microstructure, biodegradation, cytocompatibility, osteoinduction in vitro, and performance in vivo are systematically compared. The review also includes the mineralization of self-mineralizable collagen matrices and references regarding collagen/PAA interactions in other fields. Finally, future potential improvements in this field are discussed.

Biomimetic Dentin Repair: Amelogenin-Derived Peptide Guides Occlusion and Peritubular Mineralization of Human Teeth

Deniz T. Yucesoy et al.

Summary: Exposure of dentin tubules due to loss of protective enamel and cementum has been the leading cause of dentin hypersensitivity. Current treatments provide short-lived effects, and there is no permanent solution available. This study describes a biomimetic treatment using a mineralization directing peptide to promote dentin repair and form an infiltrating mineral layer. The remineralized dentin showed similar composition to hydroxyapatite and exhibited higher mechanical properties than demineralized dentin.

Crosslinking Improve Demineralized Dentin Performance and Synergistically Promote Biomimetic Mineralization by CaP_PILP

Lin Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of optimal crosslinking on demineralized dentin matrix and its possible synergism with bionic remineralization using calcium phosphate polymer-induced liquid precursor (CaP-PILP), aiming to improve resin-dentin bonding and dentin hypersensitivity in dental clinical practice. Demineralized dentin was crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA), carbodiimide (EDC), and procyanidin (PA) and then subjected to CaP-PILP biomimetic remineralization. The results showed that GA and PA crosslinking preserved the structural integrity, enzyme resistance, and mechanical properties of the collagen fiber network better than EDC and no treatment. PA exhibited the strongest synergistic effects on bionic remineralization by CaP-PILP, significantly improving the quality and shortening the duration of mineralization. These findings have significant implications for resin-dentin bonding and dentin hypersensitivity in dental clinical practice.

Bioactive Inorganic Materials for Dental Applications: A Narrative Review

Khalid S. Almulhim et al.

Summary: This review article introduces the application of bioceramics in dental restorations. Despite their similar chemical composition to human hard tissues and excellent bioactive and biological properties, concern has been raised regarding the mechanical properties of bioceramics. Dental materials must be biocompatible, long-lasting, mechanically strong enough, wear-resistant, easily manipulated, and implanted.

MMP Inhibitors and Dentin Bonding: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

O. Kiuru et al.

Summary: The use of MMP inhibitors, especially chlorhexidine (CHX), can reduce the loss of dentin bond strength, with significantly higher bond strengths in the CHX group compared to the control group after aging. More long-term studies with lower risk of bias are needed to increase the reliability of the results.

Remineralising effects of fluoride varnishes containing calcium phosphate on artificial root caries lesions with adjunctive application of proanthocyanidin

Jing Cai et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the re-mineralising effects of different fluoride varnishes and toothpaste combinations on root caries lesions, finding that some combinations can effectively increase mineral density and hardness. Additionally, the use of proanthocyanidin as an adjunct was found to increase mineral density and improve the efficacy of caries treatment.

Building an aprismatic enamel-like layer on a demineralized enamel surface by using carboxymethyl chitosan and lysozyme-encapsulated amorphous calcium phosphate nanogels

Jinhua Song et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare CMC/LYZ-ACP nanogels for controlled delivery of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to form an aprismatic enamel-like layer on demineralized enamel. The nanogels were negatively charged spherical structures with a particle size of approximately 300 nm, and at high concentrations of NaCl, ACP was dissociated from the nanogels and transformed into hydroxyapatite (HAP).

Summary: The combination of nanohydroxyapatite and proanthocyanidin shows significant potential for promoting remineralization and improving collagen stability in demineralized dentin within a clinically feasible period of 1 min. The effects on dentin properties were related to increasing flexural strength, indicating an improvement in mechanical properties.

Biomineralization of Enamel and Dentin Mediated by Matrix Proteins

J. Moradian-Oldak et al.

Summary: Biomineralization of enamel, dentin, and bone involves the deposition of apatite mineral crystals within an organic matrix. While the structure and organic composition of these tissues differ, the molecular mechanisms involving protein interactions and crystallization events are common. The review highlights the importance of protein matrix control in the mineralization process and discusses strategies for biomimetic growth of enamel and repair of demineralized dentin and bone tissue engineering.
