Reconstruction of sleeper displacements from measured accelerations for model-based condition monitoring of railway crossing panels

Marko D. G. Milosevic et al.

Summary: Railway switches and crossings (S&C, turnouts) are essential for connecting different track sections, but they also cause higher degradation rates compared to regular tracks. This paper focuses on the development of tailored signal processing tools for condition monitoring using embedded accelerometers in crossing panels. Analysis of sleeper acceleration measurement data from 100,000 train passages is performed, and a novel frequency-domain displacement reconstruction method is developed. The separation of the track response is proposed as a strategy to observe the ballast condition and crossing geometry condition.

Uncertainty quantification and global sensitivity analysis of composite wind turbine blades

Mishal Thapa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a framework for uncertainty quantification (UQ) and global sensitivity analysis (GSA) of composite wind turbine blades using polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) with l(1)-minimization. The framework is capable of handling a large number of random parameters and can assess the relative importance of these parameters using Sobol Indices. It also allows for arbitrary distributions of random inputs and spatial variations of material and geometric properties. The presented framework is applied to three composite wind turbine blade problems, and results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations.

Analysis of the consistency of the Sperling index for rail vehicles based on different algorithms

Chenxin Deng et al.

Summary: Ride comfort indices are used to assess rail vehicle vibration and passenger discomfort, with the Sperling index being widely used but with inconsistent results from different algorithms. This study compares time and frequency domain analysis algorithms, finding r.m.s-based algorithms to be stable and consistent across different sample times. Time-frequency consistency is verified using Parseval's theorem and time domain simulation results.

Modeling uncertainties of vehicle-track coupled dynamic systems

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, nonparametric models of vehicle and track subsystems are established separately using a probabilistic method. The sensitivity of random responses to uncertainties in coefficient matrices is analyzed, and confidence intervals from nonparametric and parametric models are compared. The results validate the effectiveness of the nonparametric model for vehicle-track coupled systems.

Polynomial chaos expansion for sensitivity analysis of model output with dependent inputs

Thierry A. Mara et al.

Summary: This paper discusses sensitivity analysis of model response in the presence of dependent model inputs. Two types of sensitivity indices are evaluated: those accounting for input dependence and those that do not. New strategies and computationally efficient methods for estimating variance-based sensitivity indices are derived, relying on polynomial chaos expansion. Numerical exercises demonstrate the performance of these new methods, including a sensitivity analysis of a drainage model following statistical calibration.

Fast and robust identification of railway track stiffness from simple field measurement

Chen Shen et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a method that combines a physics-based finite element (FE) track model and a data-driven Gaussian process regression (GPR) model to directly infer railpad and ballast stiffness from measured frequency response functions (FRF) by field hammer tests. The enriched features and fusion strategy effectively reduce prediction errors, outperforming particle swarm optimization (PSO) in worst-case scenarios. The method enables fast predictions for large datasets and can extract stiffness values using a simple setup.

Variance-based reliability sensitivity analysis and the FORM α-factors

Iason Papaioannou et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the relation between variance-based sensitivity measures and FORM alpha-factors, showing that there exist one-to-one relationships between them for linear limit-state functions of normal random variables. The relationships enable a good approximation of variance-based sensitivities for general reliability problems, shedding light on the behavior of first-order and total-effect indices of the failure event in engineering reliability problems.

Extremum sensitivity analysis with polynomial Monte Carlo filtering

Chun Yui Wong et al.

Summary: Global sensitivity analysis is a powerful approach for understanding the importance and interactions between uncertain parameters in a computational model. This paper explores the efficient computation of sensitivity indices through polynomial ridge approximation and methods for evaluating sensitivities near output extrema, including novel extremum Sobol' indices based on Monte Carlo filtering (MCF). The relationship between MCF-based indices and skewness-based indices is empirically explored, showcasing the potential effectiveness of these approaches.
