Integrated approaches for increasing plant yield under salt stress

Irshad Ahmad et al.

Summary: Salt stress has significant negative impacts on plant growth and yield, but integrative approaches such as plant hormones, nutrient absorption and utilization, developing salt-tolerant varieties, and enhancing morpho-physiological activities can help mitigate these effects. Although many studies have investigated the effects of these integrative approaches, a comprehensive review is still lacking. This review focuses on nutrient absorption and utilization, development of salt-tolerant varieties, and their effects on plant growth and yield, as well as the role of phytohormones and relevant genes in salt stress response.

Bioactive peptides from broccoli stems strongly enhance regenerative keratinocytes by stimulating controlled proliferation

Juan Nicolas-Espinosa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of peptides derived from broccoli to human keratinocytes, and found that these peptide mixtures promoted cell proliferation and wound healing while inhibiting carcinogenesis in cells. These results encourage further research in using Brassica peptides for pharmaceutical or cosmetic purposes.

Trait ecology of startup plants

Mark Westoby et al.

Summary: This article discusses the trait differences between startup plants and adult plants, and proposes some testable questions based on theoretical concepts. By analyzing leaf mass per area (LMA), it is found that startup plants should have lower construction costs than established plants, and LMA should increase progressively with height or total leaf area. It is of great significance for studying theoretical and field-tested knowledge about plant startups.

EuPIP1;2, a Plasma Membrane Aquaporin Gene from Eucommia ulmoides, Enhances Drought and Salt Tolerance in Transgenic Tobacco

Jiajia Chen et al.

Summary: Aquaporins are membrane channel proteins that transport water and other small molecules in plants. In this study, the plasma membrane aquaporin gene EuPIP1;2 was isolated from the medicinal plant Eucommia ulmoides. Overexpression of EuPIP1;2 in transgenic tobacco enhanced plant tolerance of drought and salinity, possibly by reducing membrane damage and improving osmotic adjustment.

Genome-wide identification and biological relevance of broccoli aquaporins

Juan Nicolas-Espinosa et al.

Summary: Broccoli contains various bioactive compounds that provide health benefits. This study identified 65 aquaporin genes in broccoli and analyzed their phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary events, and functional roles. Through expression analyses, NIPs were found to play a crucial role in broccoli plants' response to abiotic stress. This research provides valuable insights into the physiological significance of aquaporin isoforms in broccoli.

Interrelations of nutrient and water transporters in plants under abiotic stress

Gloria Barzana et al.

Summary: Plants undergo abiotic stress due to environmental changes, affecting their uptake of nutrients and water essential for metabolism, growth, and cellular homeostasis. The response of the plant genome to nutrient deficiency, drought, salinity, and low temperature involves changes in the expression of nutrient transporters and aquaporins. Tolerant plants generally increase the expression of nutrient transporters and aquaporins in response to drought, salinity, and low temperature stresses.

Membrane dynamics during individual and combined abiotic stresses in plants and tools to study the same

Nishtha Rawat et al.

Summary: The plasma membrane of plant cells is a highly diverse biological membrane that is crucial for maintaining cell integrity and regulating cellular functions. It is a complex structure composed of lipids and proteins, which play essential roles in protecting the cell and influencing membrane protein functioning. Maintenance of membrane integrity and fluidity is essential for plants to survive under adverse environmental conditions, with the ability to remodel membrane lipid and protein composition playing a crucial role in adaptation to different environmental stresses.

Summary: Aquaporins (AQPs) are pore-forming proteins involved in water transport and physiological processes. In this study, 38 AQPs were identified in the pomegranate genome and categorized into different subgroups. Computational analysis confirmed their characteristics and expression patterns in response to stress. Overall, this research sheds light on the role of AQPs in plant development and stress tolerance.
