Ammonia Synthesis over Fe-Supported Catalysts Mediated by Face-Sharing Nitrogen Sites in BaTiO3-xNy Oxynitride

Masayoshi Miyazaki et al.

Summary: Nitride and hydride materials have been proposed as active supports for transition metal catalysts in thermal catalytic ammonia synthesis. The role of nitrogen or hydride anions in supporting transition-metal catalysts, particularly Fe-based catalysts, is not well understood. This study demonstrates that nitrogen vacancies in hexagonal-BaTiO3-xNy act as more efficient supports for Fe catalysts in ammonia synthesis compared to BaTiO3 or BaTiO3-xHx. The activation of nitrogen molecules at the nitrogen vacancies formed at the interface between Fe nanoparticles and the support is responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity.

Hexagonal BaTiO(3-x)Hx Oxyhydride as a Water-Durable Catalyst Support for Chemoselective Hydrogenation

Masayoshi Miyazaki et al.

Summary: In this study, heavily H-doped BaTiO(3-x)Hx was used as an efficient and water-durable catalyst support for Pd nano-particles in liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions. The BaTiO(3-x)Hxoxyhydride with a hexagonal crystal structure exhibited metallic properties and showed high catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated C-C bonds.

Conductometric acetic anhydride gas sensors based on S-doped porous ZnO microspheres with enhanced Lewis base interaction

Hongmin Zhu et al.

Summary: Acetic anhydride is a crucial raw material for manufacturing heroin, and its rapid detection using semiconductor sensors is vital for curbing the spread of drugs. This study proposes a strategy to enhance the Lewis base sites on the ZnO surface through S-doping, based on the Lewis acid properties of acetic anhydride and Lewis acid-base theory. The synthesized S-doped porous spherical ZnO sensor showed a significantly improved response to acetic anhydride compared to ZnO, with enhanced Lewis basicity confirmed by various characterization techniques. Gas-phase mass spectrometry combined with DFT calculations provided insights into the catalytic degradation of acetic anhydride during the sensing process.

Production of liquid fuel intermediates from furfural via aldol condensation over La2O2CO3-ZnO-Al2O3 catalyst

Xiao Kong et al.

Summary: Aldol condensation of furfural with acetone over basic catalysts produces furanic adducts that can be transformed into diesel fuels. This study synthesized La2O2CO3-promoted ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts with medium strength basic sites, showing improved catalytic performance. The medium strength basic sites were found to be especially active for aldol condensation reactions.
