Role of Zinc and Copper in Erythropoiesis in Patients on Hemodialysis

Akira Takahashi

Summary: Plasma zinc concentrations are decreased in patients on hemodialysis, and zinc supplementation can increase hemoglobin levels and reduce erythropoietin-stimulating agent treatments. However, inappropriate zinc supplementation can cause copper deficiency. This review discusses the roles of zinc and copper in erythropoiesis and proposes a nutritional therapy that promotes erythropoiesis while avoiding copper deficiency through safe zinc supplementation.

Copper deficiency, a rare but correctable cause of pancytopenia: a review of literature

Nayha Tahir et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the prevalence, etiology, pathophysiology, complications, and treatment of copper deficiency. Expert opinion suggests that copper deficiency is often underestimated as the cause of anemia, neutropenia, and bone marrow dysplasia. As it is potentially treatable, it should always be considered as a differential diagnosis when patients present with neurological and hematological abnormalities.

Four Cases of Serum Copper Excess in Patients with Renal Anemia Receiving a Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitor: A Possible Safety Concern

Hironori Nakamura et al.

Summary: This study reports 4 cases of renal anemia patients who showed excess in serum copper level during HIF-PHIs treatment, which was normalized after discontinuing HIF-PHIs. It suggests that HIF-PHIs use is associated with serum copper excess and might lead to adverse events.

Recommendations by the Asian Pacific society of nephrology (APSN) on the appropriate use of HIF-PH inhibitors

Desmond Y. H. Yap et al.

Summary: Renal anaemia is a common and important complication in patients with chronic kidney disease, and the use of HIF-PHI has emerged as a novel approach for its management. However, when prescribing this class of drug, potential benefits and harms need to be carefully considered.

Association of Zinc Deficiency with Development of CVD Events in Patients with CKD

Shinya Nakatani et al.

Summary: Zinc deficiency is common in CKD patients and linked to cardiovascular disease risk factors. Zinc can protect against phosphate-induced arterial calcification by suppressing activation of nuclear factor, while higher dietary zinc intake is associated with lower risk of abdominal aortic calcification.
