On recyclability of thermosetting polymer and wood dust as reinforcement in secondary recycled ABS for nonstructural engineering applications

Kapil Chawla et al.

Summary: The management of thermosetting plastic solid waste is a serious global issue, and recycling is the only way to reduce its harmful effects. In this study, feedstock filaments for thermoplastic composite were prepared using secondary recycled ABS as the matrix and waste bakelite powder and wood dust as reinforcements. The mechanical, rheological, morphological, and thermal properties of the composite filaments were explored, and it was found that ABS composite filaments reinforced with 10% by weight of bakelite powder possessed high peak strength, energy carrying capacity, thermal stability, and low porosity.

Investigation of Wood Flour Size, Aspect Ratios, and Injection Molding Temperature on Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour/Polyethylene Composites

Mohammad E. Golmakani et al.

Summary: The present research investigated the mechanical properties of wood flour reinforced polyethylene polymer composites with varying wood flour size, aspect ratios, and mold injection temperature. Results showed that reducing the wood flour size decreased the tensile strength and modulus, flexural strength and impact energy, while increasing the flexural modulus. Additionally, increasing the injection molding temperature decreased the tensile strength and modulus, impact energy, while increasing the flexural strength and modulus. Thus, optimizing the injection molding temperature can improve the mechanical properties of the composite.

Change in Micromechanical Behavior of Surface Densified Wood Cell Walls in Response to Superheated Steam Treatment

Elin Xiang et al.

Summary: The combination of surface densification and superheated steam treatment can enhance the mechanical properties and dimensional stability of low-density wood. Results showed that both 0.1 MPa and 0.3 MPa superheated steam treatments increased the elastic modulus and hardness of fiber cell walls in surface densified wood, with 0.3 MPa treatment showing better effects on reducing creep ratio and creep compliance.

In the mix: The effect of wood composition on the 3D printability and mechanical performance of wood-plastic composites

Yerong Huang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses how sawdust, a byproduct of the forest industry, can be used to manufacture semi-green Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) 3D printed elements suitable for architectural applications. It investigates the effects of wood composition variations on the mechanical properties of 3D printed WPCs, finding that rounder and smoother wood particles increase strength, stiffness, and density. Furthermore, a higher wood to plastic ratio results in a greener product with improved stiffness.
