Were Arenga Palms (Arecaceae) Present in the Eocene? A Review of the Genus Succinometrioxena Legalov, 2012

Andrei A. Legalov

Summary: This study suggests that palms of the genus Arenga or similar forms were present in the Eocene of North America and Europe. Fossil records of Metrioxenini, which feed exclusively on these palms, support this hypothesis. A new species, Succinometrioxena andrushchenkoi Legalov, sp. n., found in Baltic amber, is described and differentiated from other species based on body size, elytral punctation, and the curvature of the rostrum in females. The male description of S. poinari is provided for the first time, along with a list and key to fossil Metrioxenini. The distribution of modern and fossil Metrioxenini and Arenga palms is also documented.

Eocene Araucariaceaein Europe: additional evidence from a new Baltic amber species of the genus Oxycraspedus Kuschel, 1955 (Coleoptera: Belidae)

A. A. Legalov et al.

Summary: A new species of the genus Oxycraspedus from the tribe Oxycraspedini is described, named Oxycraspedus argetus n. sp. It is similar to Oxycraspedus minutus but differs in certain characteristics. This new species has a different body coloration, body shape, and structure of the tarsomere compared to Oxycraspedus poinari. The presence of extinct weevils in the late Eocene Baltic amber forest suggests the existence of certain host plants, possibly belonging to the genus Araucaria.

Lobanoviella andreyi, new genus and species of Lobanoviellini trib. nov. in the subfamily Palophaginae (Coleoptera, Megalopodidae) from the Eocene Baltic amber, with discussion of similarity with Phloeostichidae

A. G. Kirejtshuk et al.

Summary: The newly discovered Lobanoviella genus shows structural similarities with modern members, now classified as Palophaginae family, and confirms the correct attribution of Pleuroceratos Poinar et Kirejtshuk, 2008 as a member of the Sphindidae family.

The hyperdiverse conifer flora of the Baltic amber forest

Eva-Maria Sadowski et al.

Summary: Baltic amber is an important Cenozoic fossil Lagerstatten, containing numerous fossils including invertebrates. However, the identity of the amber-producing conifers and the specific habitat and climate conditions under which the resins were exuded are not well known. This study revises and analyzes conifer inclusions in Baltic amber, identifying five families, 17 genera, and 26 fossil species of conifers. The results reveal a hyperdiversity of conifer taxa and suggest that the Baltic amber forest grew under a warm-temperate and humid palaeoclimate.

Formica species (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Formicinae) in late Eocene Rovno amber

Alexander G. Radchenko et al.

Summary: A new species, Formica ribbeckei, is described based on four workers from late Eocene Rovno amber in Ukraine. This species is most similar to F. flori, but differs mainly in the 5-segmented maxillary palps and shorter first funicular segment.
