Distinct ion irradiation response in VTaTi medium entropy alloy from elemental metal V

L. Mei et al.

Summary: The microstructural and mechanical property changes induced by 6 MeV titanium ion irradiation are comparatively investigated between VTaTi and V. It is found that the aggregation of irradiation induced defect clusters is strongly suppressed in VTaTi compared to V, with much smaller defect size. Moreover, the loops in VTaTi are <100>-type while those in V are mainly 1/2<111>-type. Nanoindentation tests further demonstrate that VTaTi has significantly weaker irradiation hardening than V, indicating improved irradiation resistance.

Impact of micro-alloying in ion-irradiated nickel: From the inhibition of point-defect cluster diffusion by thermal segregation to the change of dislocation loop nature

Kan Ma et al.

Summary: Micro-alloying significantly affects the incubation period of void swelling in face-centered cubic materials. The mechanism relating to the formation of dislocation loops is still unclear. This study uses pure Ni, Ni-0.4wt.%Cr, and Ni-0.4/0.8/1.2wt.%Ti as model materials to investigate the solute effects on loop evolution during early-stage irradiation. Experimental techniques including in-situ transmission electron microscopy and ex-situ irradiation are employed to study the characteristics of dislocation loops. The results show that a small amount of Ti increases loop density, while reducing loop mobility and stacking fault energy. It also stabilizes self-interstitial loops depending on Ti content and temperature.

Role of low-level void swelling on plasticity and failure in a 33 dpa neutron-irradiated 304 stainless steel

H. T. Vo et al.

Summary: Radiation damage leads to various defects in structural materials depending on irradiation conditions. Irradiation-induced loops and void formation are common types of defects. This study used microscale bicrystal testing to evaluate the effects of low-level void swelling on dislocation-channel suppression and intergranular cracking in neutron-irradiated stainless steel. The results demonstrated the direct observation of the suppression of dislocation-channel and intergranular cracking in the presence of low-level void swelling.

Improved irradiation resistance of Cr-Fe alloy for Cr-coated Zircaloy application in accident tolerant fuel

L. J. Cui et al.

Summary: Coating Cr onto Zircaloy has become a popular topic in the nuclear material field, especially after the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in 2011. However, the influence of solute element Fe on the potential performance improvement in the Cr coating layer, particularly under irradiation, remains unknown. The addition of Fe in Cr-7Fe alloy not only strengthens the material but also significantly reduces irradiation-induced hardness and void swelling.

Deformation dynamics of a neutron-irradiated aluminum alloy: An in situ synchrotron tomography study

H. W. Chai et al.

Summary: In order to study the long-term effects of neutron irradiation on the mechanical behavior of nuclear materials, in situ quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests are conducted on an LT21 aluminum alloy. Various characterization techniques, such as SEM/TEM, micro CT, and synchrotron micro CT, are used to analyze the microstructures, deformation, and damage dynamics of the irradiated material. The results show significant microstructural changes, including particle precipitation/aggregation and increased pore and particle size, in the irradiated LT21 Al alloy. The deformation behavior and damage accumulation contribute to a better understanding of the aging process in nuclear materials.

Coupled effect of Cr and Al on interactions between a prismatic interstitial dislocation loop and an edge dislocation line in Fe-Cr-Al alloy

Miaosen Yu et al.

Summary: The segregation behavior of Cr and Al atoms to a prismatic dislocation loop in a Fe-Cr-Al alloy is investigated using molecular dynamics method and ab initio energy calculation. The results show that Cr can segregate to the loops, while Al atoms cannot segregate by themselves. However, the presence of segregated Cr atoms can promote Al segregation, resulting in a coupled segregation of Cr and Al. Furthermore, the pinning behavior of the dislocation loop to an edge dislocation motion can be affected by Al segregation through the coupled segregation process.

Dynamic equilibrium of displacement damage defects in heavy-ion irradiated tungsten

Shiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the evolution of dislocation-type defects in tungsten irradiated by deuterium and confirms the dynamic equilibrium of damage defects. The major interstitial-type defects transform from dislocation loops to dislocation lines and then to dislocation networks as the irradiation dose increases. In contrast, the dominant category of vacancy-type defects remains unchanged. The dynamic equilibrium of defects is characterized by a stable microstructural configuration and is confirmed by multiple results.

Toward accurate evaluation of bulk hardness from nanoindentation testing at low indent depths

Pengcheng Zhu et al.

Summary: Estimations of bulk hardness from nanoindentation can be uncertain due to various factors, but with proper testing methods and corrections for effects like pileup, accurate predictions can be made for different materials. A study on high purity Fe and Fe-Cr alloys showed consistent results under different conditions, with pileup corrections helping to improve the accuracy of bulk hardness measurements.

Temperature dependent deformation localization in irradiated tungsten

Zhijie Li et al.

Summary: Tungsten, as the plasma-facing material in nuclear fusion devices, exhibits plasticity with strong temperature dependence and non-Schmid effect, but the influence of these features on irradiated tungsten behavior is not well understood. A crystal plasticity model has been developed to study this, showing that post-irradiation mechanical tests at room temperature may underestimate deformation localization, while thermal-activated dislocation mobility in low temperatures may lead to short-term deformation without clear dislocation channels.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.
