International Survey of Medical Students Exposure to Relevant Global Surgery (ISOMERS): A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: This study evaluated the exposure of medical students to global surgery, their awareness of the key messages of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, their career aspirations in global surgery, and the barriers they face. The results showed that most medical students considered global surgery a relevant topic and desired additional resources on the subject. However, only a small percentage of students had been exposed to global surgery, and difficulty in providing appropriate care for patients living abroad was the most common barrier to a career in this field.

Qualitative Analysis of the Host-Perceived Impact of Unidirectional Global Surgery Training in Kijabe, Kenya: Benefits, Challenges, and a Desire for Bidirectional Exchange

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of unidirectional visitor involvement from the perspectives of host surgical personnel in Kijabe, Kenya. Results showed that visitor involvement had benefits for host surgical personnel, including positive learning experiences and capacity building. However, there were also challenges, such as short stays and cultural differences. Host participants expressed interest in a bidirectional exchange.

Epistemic injustice in academic global health

Summary: This Viewpoint highlights the pervasive wrongs related to knowledge production, use, and circulation in global health, focusing on common practices in academic global health that are peppered with epistemic wrongs. It describes two forms of epistemic wrongs, credibility deficit and interpretive marginalisation, illustrating how these wrongs are linked to producers' pose and audience's gaze. The epistemic injustice framework presented can help address and potentially undo unfair knowledge practices in global health.
