Self-compression of femtosecond laser pulses in ambient air through conical radiation

Xinhua Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the self-compression of near-infrared laser pulses down to 8.8 fs in ambient air using self-phase modulation in air and negative dispersion in laser-induced plasma. The compressed pulses are achieved through conical radiation, eliminating the need for additional dispersion compensation. This offers a simple and compact approach to generate sub-10 fs laser pulses for time-resolved applications in ultrafast diagnostics and spectroscopy.

High-harmonic generation from topological surface states

Ya Bai et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional topological insulators host unique spin-polarized surface states with no energy gap, exhibiting unconventional charge and spin transport properties. High harmonic generation from the intrinsic topological insulator BiSbTeSe2 reveals that even-order harmonics polarized along the pump polarization stem from the spin current in helical surface states, while perpendicular components originate from out-of-plane spin polarization related to hexagonal wrapping effect.

Effect of decreasing pressure on soliton self-compression in higher-order modes of a gas-filled capillary

Ying Wan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that soliton self-compression in higher-order modes of a gas-filled capillary can be significantly enhanced with decreasing pressure, leading to sub-cycle duration pulses. A negative pressure gradient effectively suppresses intermodal coupling in the later stage of the compressor, helping to maintain high output mode purity. These findings have direct benefits for applications requiring ultrashort light pulses in unconventional spatial beam profiles.

Generation of annular femtosecond few-cycle pulses by self-compression and spatial filtering in solid thin plates

Yitan Gao et al.

Summary: Femtosecond few-cycle pulses with annular shape are generated by propagating 40fs laser pulses through 6 solid thin plates in numerical simulations and experiments. The generation of such pulses relies on the conical emission caused by plasma effect, inducing negative dispersion leading to self-compression of the pulse and formation of an annular beam. By adjusting input pulse energy and the position of thin plates relative to laser focus, control over plasma density can be achieved, modifying the ratio between ionization and positive dispersion effects to regulate laser intensity and plasma density, thereby managing the negative dispersion experienced by the pulse during propagation.
