Biochemical and physiological mechanism induced by melatonin in Mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) plants: cold and freezing stress

Alireza Sanie Khatam et al.

Summary: The study found that melatonin significantly enhanced the cold tolerance of Mexican lime plants. At 0 degrees C, the mechanisms of melatonin involved increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes, proline, soluble carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds. At -6 degrees C, non-enzymatic antioxidants such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds played a more significant role in enhancing cold resistance. Therefore, melatonin has the potential to improve the resistance of Mexican lime plants to cold stress.

Hormesis Responses of Photosystem II in Arabidopsis thaliana under Water Deficit Stress

Ilektra Sperdouli et al.

Summary: Since drought stress is a significant risk for agriculture, understanding the mechanisms of how plants respond to water deficit stress is crucial. In this study, we used chlorophyll fluorescence imaging analysis to assess the photosystem II (PSII) responses in young and mature leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana under different levels of water deficit stress. We found that water deficit stress induced a hormetic response in PSII function in both leaf types, with young leaves showing lower oxidative stress and higher anthocyanin content compared to mature leaves. The differential response of PSII in young and mature leaves to water deficit stress is regulated by the leaf developmental stage, which modulates anthocyanin accumulation in a stress-dependent manner.

Combined effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles and melatonin on wheat growth, chlorophyll contents, cadmium (Cd) and zinc uptake under Cd stress

Fu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and melatonin (MT) on the uptake of cadmium (Cd) by wheat. The results showed that ZnONPs stimulated wheat growth and yield, and this effect was enhanced by foliar application of MT. ZnONPs decreased Cd concentration and increased zinc (Zn) concentration in the plant tissues, leading to a decrease in bioavailable Cd in the soil. The combined use of ZnONPs and MT may provide new approaches for reducing Cd uptake and increasing zinc biofortification in edible parts of plants.

The role of phytomelatonin receptor 1-mediated signaling in plant growth and stress response

Dawood Khan et al.

Summary: Phytomelatonin is a versatile signaling molecule that regulates plant growth, development, and stress response. The discovery of the phytomelatonin receptor PMTR1 has revolutionized plant research, revealing a receptor-based regulatory strategy. PMTR1 homologs have been identified in various plant species and found to regulate seed germination, stomatal closure, leaf senescence, and stress responses. This article reviews the recent evidence on PMTR1-mediated regulatory pathways in phytomelatonin signaling under environmental stimuli, suggesting a convergent evolution of melatonin recognition in different species based on structural similarity.

Reactive oxygen species: Connecting eustress, hormesis, and allostasis in plants

Mustafa Cemre Sonmez et al.

Summary: Hormesis, priming, and allostasis, three fields related to stress tolerance and toxicity, provide insights into the relationship between reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress, and antioxidants. Hormesis is the phenomenon that toxic substances and stressful conditions show a biphasic dose-response curve and have a beneficial effect at low doses. Priming studies demonstrate that low doses of H2O2 confer cross-tolerance to plants and are considered eustress. Allostasis, a concept from human and mammalian studies, suggests that the short-term stress response in organisms is beneficial but damaging in the long term.

Enhanced function of non-photoinhibited photosystem II complexes upon PSII photoinhibition

Sanna Gunell et al.

Summary: Light-induced photosystem II photoinhibition causes inactivation and irreversible damage to the reaction center protein(s), but the light harvesting complexes continue to collect light energy. This study investigates the consequences of such photoinhibition on thylakoid light harvesting and electron transfer reactions in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. The results show that without blocking the repair of damaged photosystem II centers, photoinhibition increases the excitation of photosystem II relative to photosystem I, while blocking repair leads to increased excitation of photosystem I and strong oxidation of the electron transfer chain. It is hypothesized that dynamic regulation of the LHCII system plays a crucial role in controlling excitation energy transfer during photosystem II damage and repair to maintain efficient and safe photosynthesis.
