Virtual image-based cloud removal for Landsat images

Zhanpeng Wang et al.

Summary: The contamination of thick clouds in Landsat images has greatly affected the usability and applications of these images. The development of cloud removal algorithms has become a popular research topic, but determining the optimal reference image remains challenging. To address this issue, a new algorithm called Virtual Image-based Cloud Removal (VICR) is proposed, which reconstructs the missing surface reflectance in cloud regions by three steps: virtual image construction, similar pixel selection using the newly proposed TWSD, and residual image estimation. VICR outperforms other algorithms in surface reflectance estimation, especially in sites with abrupt land change.

Tracking annual changes in the distribution and composition of saltmarsh vegetation on the Jiangsu coast of China using Landsat time series-based phenological parameters

Chao Sun et al.

Summary: This study used Land Surface Phenology (LSP) to dynamically monitor and classify saltmarsh vegetation in the Jiangsu Province of China. The results showed the feasibility of LSP for large-scale and long-term classification mapping, despite limitations due to weather and tidal fluctuations. The study also discovered the resilience of saltmarsh vegetation to tidal flat reclamation, but the need for conservation measures to prevent the decline of Suaeda salsa species.

Multi-sensor change detection for within-year capture and labelling of forest disturbance

Jeffrey A. Cardille et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A and -2B data streams to detect stand-replacing forest changes in central British Columbia, Canada, with reduced latency. They introduce a new algorithm, SLIMS, to rapidly and reliably detect change and use a Bayesian approach to combine changes detected in the Landsat and Sentinel data streams. The results show high accuracy in identifying the type and timing of stand-replacing disturbances in these forests.

Quantifying latitudinal variation in land surface phenology of Spartina alterniflora saltmarshes across coastal wetlands in China by Landsat 7/8 and Sentinel-2 images

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the phenology variation of S. alterniflora saltmarshes across coastal China during 2018-2020 using Landsat 7/8 and Sentinel-2 images. Three widely used phenology retrieval methods showed similar patterns in retrieving the start and end of season (SOS and EOS) as well as the length of season (LOS) of S. alterniflora saltmarshes, demonstrating the potential of Landsat 7/8 and Sentinel-2 to quantify land surface phenology.

Mapping grassland mowing events across Germany based on combined Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 time series

Marcel Schwieder et al.

Summary: Spatially explicit knowledge on grassland extent and management is critical to understand and monitor the impact of grassland use intensity on ecosystem services and biodiversity. This study used Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data to develop an algorithm for detecting mowing events in Germany from 2017 to 2020. The results showed that the detection of mowing events was influenced by data availability and regional variations, but the approach was still able to map the intensity of grassland management throughout large areas and identify regional differences.

Invasion of Spartina alternilora in the coastal zone of mainland China: Control achievements from 2015 to 2020 towards the Sustainable Development Goals

Huiying Li et al.

Summary: This study assesses the effectiveness of Spartina alternilora management during China's implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2015 to 2020. The results show a consistent reduction in the extent of S. alternilora, indicating the efficacy of control measures. Provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shanghai have successfully managed S. alternilora, while regions with more severe invasion require better management. The study emphasizes the need for objective evaluation and weighing of S. alternilora's potential utilities and governance effectiveness to achieve maximum ecological benefits and promote sustainable coastal ecosystems.

Estimating fractional cover of saltmarsh vegetation species in coastal wetlands in the Yellow River Delta, China using ensemble learning model

Zhanpeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach for estimating and mapping the fractional cover of major saltmarsh species in the Yellow River Delta, China using remote sensing data and ensemble learning models. The approach successfully estimated the fractional cover of each saltmarsh species and improved the estimation accuracy through cloud removal and high-resolution reference imagery.

Detection and characterization of coastal tidal wetland change in the northeastern US using Landsat time series

Xiucheng Yang et al.

Summary: Coastal tidal wetlands are highly altered ecosystems that are exposed to significant risk due to land-use change and sea-level rise. Understanding the changes in these wetlands is important for coastal communities and natural resource management. However, mapping these changes on a large scale is challenging due to the dynamic nature of coastal tidal wetlands.

Mowing detection using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series for large scale grassland monitoring

Mathilde De Vroey et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method combining the observations of Sentinel-1 (S1) and the accuracy of Sentinel-2 (S2) satellites was proposed for grassland monitoring. The method was validated and assessed in European countries and showed good stability and accuracy across different environments. This method has the potential to be used for supporting agri-environmental schemes in Europe.

Tracking vegetation degradation and recovery in multiple mining areas in Beijing, China, based on time-series Landsat imagery

Yue Han et al.

Summary: A new method was proposed to automatically characterize vegetation degradation and recovery trajectories for multiple mine sites, achieving satisfactory accuracy in trajectory type classification. In the study area, around one-third of the mine sites have recovered, while some have experienced degradation likely due to illegal mining activities.

Plant species classification in salt marshes using phenological parameters derived from Sentinel-2 pixel-differential time-series

Chao Sun et al.

Summary: This study proposed a vegetation classification method for salt marshes using time-series data derived from Sentinel-2, achieving high accuracy in plant species classification by extracting phenological parameters. The results showed unique phenological characteristics among the six plant species, especially with Phragmites australis exhibiting an advanced green-up season and Spartina alterniflora senescing later than native plants in the region.

Mapping coastal wetlands in the Yellow River Delta, China during 2008-2019: impacts of valid observations, harmonic regression, and critical months

Zhanpeng Wang et al.

Summary: Annual mapping of the Yellow River Delta wetland from 2008 to 2019 using time-series Landsat images revealed a significant expansion of Spartina alterniflora, encroaching on other vegetation types. The study found that the number of valid observations affects spatial and temporal classification accuracies, with harmonic regression features playing a crucial role in improving overall accuracies. Temporal distribution of observations was identified as more important than the quantity of observations for harmonic-based classification of coastal wetlands like the YRD.

A Simple Phenology-Based Vegetation Index for Mapping Invasive Spartina Alterniflora Using Google Earth Engine

Ronglong Xu et al.

Summary: The introduced Spartina alterniflora has become a top invasive plant in Chinese coastal wetlands, and a simple phenological vegetation index (PVI) was proposed using Sentinel-2 observations. Among the six PVIs developed and compared, the phenological normalized vegetation difference index (PNDVI) showed better separability for identifying S. alterniflora and other land cover types compared to other indices and single-season NDVI.
