A study to investigate the relationship between ionospheric disturbance and seismic activity based on Swarm satellite data

Yufei He et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between ionospheric disturbances and seismic events using electron density data observed by the Swarm constellation and earthquake records. Most ionospheric disturbances are related to ionospheric activities, while some are associated with seismic activity with disturbances typically occurring before earthquakes. Earthquake-induced disturbances are weak and often masked by strong ionospheric activities, making identification challenging in future research on seismo-ionospheric phenomena.

The First Evidence for the Detection of CIDs Masked by Equatorial Plasma Bubbles From GPS-TEC Data

R. Rajesh et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the strong influence of equatorial plasma bubbles masks co-seismic ionospheric disturbances for earthquakes in low latitude equatorial regions during post-sunset time. By applying frequency domain singular spectrum analysis, the study was able to detect and separate the CIDs for the Nias earthquake but not clearly for the Mexico earthquake, where EPB anomalies are dominant. The analysis also shows the presence of acoustic and surface waves for both earthquakes and propagating gravity waves for the Mexico earthquake, which generated a moderate tsunami.

Electromagnetic conjugacy of ionospheric disturbances after the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption as seen in GNSS-TEC and SuperDARN Hokkaido pair of radars observations

Atsuki Shinbori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of electromagnetic conjugacy of traveling ionospheric disturbances after the volcanic eruption on January 15, 2022. Through the analysis of satellite and radar data, two westward-propagating traveling ionospheric disturbances were observed in the Japanese sector, with a similar structure to those in the Southern Hemisphere. The appearance of these disturbances was associated with changes in plasma flow direction and the presence of a zonal electric field. The external electric field variation is believed to be generated by the E-region dynamo driven by atmospheric acoustic and gravity waves.

Pre-Earthquake Ionospheric Perturbation Identification Using CSES Data via Transfer Learning

Pan Xiong et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a deep-learning model, SeqNetQuake, which identifies ionospheric perturbations prior to earthquakes using data from the first China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES). By training directly on the CSES dataset and using transfer learning, SeqNetQuake shows significant improvements in identifying earthquake precursors and enhancing earthquake prediction performance.

Analysis of Swarm Satellite Magnetic Field Data Before the 2016 Ecuador (Mw=7.8) Earthquake Based on Non-negative Matrix Factorization

Kaiguang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the ionosphere magnetic field data of the Swarm Alpha satellite before the 2016 Ecuador earthquake was analyzed using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). It was found that anomalies in a specific weight component inside the earthquake-sensitive area showed accelerated growth before the earthquake, suggesting a possible association between the anomaly and the earthquake. This anomaly could potentially be described by one of the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) models.

Masashi Hayakawa et al.

Summary: This study discusses the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling effects during two Japanese earthquakes using multiparameter precursor observations. It was found that the electromagnetic anomalies for both earthquakes were similar and concentrated around 1 week to 9 days before the seismic events.

Integrating Pre-Earthquake Signatures From Different Precursor Tools

Essam Ghamry et al.

Summary: This research analyzes magnetic, MODIS, and MERRA-2 data around the epicenters before earthquakes in Mexico, Japan, Chile, and Indonesia, confirming temperature and magnetic field anomalies as precursors through various methods. The use of FFT and DCT for magnetic data analysis, along with Swarm satellites data, MODIS, and MERRA-2, proved effective in detecting anomalies preceding earthquakes. Five case studies demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the analysis methods.
