Exploring selected pathways to low and zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry and their impacts on resources and energy

Shaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study that used the MESSAGEix-China iron and steel model to explore pathways for achieving zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry. The study found that rapid adoption of scrap-based Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)-EAFs steel-making technologies can significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 2060. However, carbon sink or negative emission technologies will still be needed to achieve carbon neutrality. The study also highlights the varying impacts of different technologies on material and energy consumption.

Towards a CO2-neutral steel industry: Justice aspects of CO2 capture and storage, biomass- and green hydrogen-based emission reductions

Floris Swennenhuis et al.

Summary: A rapid transition towards a CO2-neutral steel industry is crucial to address climate change, but it raises justice concerns. By assessing the justice implications of different emission reduction options, this study finds variations in justice between technological routes, with regional differences in stakeholder impacts. Transparency regarding sector-specific justice implications is essential for decision-making.

CO2 accounting model and carbon reduction analysis of iron and steel plants based on intra- and inter-process carbon metabolism

Weijian Tian et al.

Summary: This study proposes a carbon emission accounting model for iron and steel plants, considering both direct and indirect emissions as well as the effects of by-product gases. Through a case study, it is found that process direct emissions are the bottleneck of carbon reduction, and significant reduction potential can be achieved through the introduction of new processes. Furthermore, optimizing the power supplying structure can reduce indirect emissions.

Development of Composite Hydraulic Actuators: A Review

Marek Lubecki et al.

Summary: With the advancement of engineering materials and the increasing demand for weight reduction and energy consumption reduction in mechanical systems, the use of composite materials in hydraulic cylinder design has been explored. Utilizing composite materials can reduce bending moments on working machine booms and decrease power demand in drive systems. Additionally, it enhances the reliability of cylinders in corrosive conditions and areas with strong electromagnetic fields. This paper presents the development of hydraulic actuators made of composite materials, highlighting the achievements of research centers and commercial companies. It also discusses the main research and engineering challenges and proposes methods to solve them based on existing literature. Furthermore, it outlines future research directions to improve reliability, efficiency, and weight reduction.

Financing coal-fired power plant to demonstrate CCS (carbon capture and storage) through an innovative policy incentive in China

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: This study explores a non-fiscal incentive policy of granting extra electricity quotas to finance early CCS demonstration projects in China. It finds that coal-fired power plants can operate at a profit with CCS retrofitting if provided with extra electricity quotas, with the necessary quota ranging from 4709 to 7260 hours per year during the demonstration stage.
