Multiresidues Multiclass Analytical Methods for Determination of Antibiotics in Animal Origin Food: A Critical Analysis

Silvia Cruz Barros et al.

Summary: Veterinary drugs are commonly used in disease prevention and treatment. However, the abuse of antibiotics as growth promoters leads to the presence of antibiotic residues in animal-origin foods, posing a threat to food safety and antibiotic resistance. Monitoring the levels of antibiotic residues in food intended for human consumption is crucial for ensuring food safety.

Epigenetic biomarkers for animal welfare monitoring

Rose Whelan et al.

Summary: Biomarkers for holistic animal welfare monitoring are urgently needed in veterinary medicine. Epigenetic modifications, like DNA methylation, have great potential for biomarker development as they provide valuable information about cellular states and environments. This review discusses animal DNA methylation patterns, the technologies for analyzing them, and key frameworks for developing compound DNA methylation biomarkers, DNA methylation clocks, and environment-specific DNA methylation signatures. Practical examples of applying these biomarkers for health and environmental exposure monitoring are also provided. This article provides an overview of the molecular and biological foundations for developing epigenetic biomarkers in veterinary science and their potential in animal welfare monitoring.

Filling gaps in animal welfare assessment through metabolomics

Maria Pia Fabrile et al.

Summary: Sustainability is a key concern in Italian livestock systems, leading to the adoption of high standards in animal husbandry conditions by food business operators. The meat sector has introduced new label claims to emphasize animal welfare, requiring tools for authenticity and traceability in the meat supply chain. However, the assessment of animal welfare status remains challenging.

Systematic review of animal-based indicators to measure thermal, social, and immune-related stress in pigs

Raul David Guevara et al.

Summary: This article reviews animal-based indicators and monitoring methods for social, thermal, and immune- related stresses in farmed pigs. The study found that rectal temperature measurement was the most commonly used method to evaluate thermal stress, aggressive behavior was the most frequently used indicator for social stress, and cytokine concentration in blood samples was the most widely used indicator for immune-related stress.

Metabolomic exploration of the effects of habituation to livestock trailer and extended transportation in goats

Phaneendra Batchu et al.

Summary: The habituation to trailers has been found to enhance stress coping abilities in goats, as it leads to higher concentrations of metabolites such as butyrate and certain amino acids that support antioxidant activities and immune function. Plasma long-chain acylcarnitines may serve as good indicators of stress during long-distance transportation in goats.

Alteration of Gut Microbiota After Antibiotic Exposure in Finishing Swine

Hee Eun Jo et al.

Summary: The study found that finishing swine administered with lincomycin exhibited gut dysbiosis, increased abundance of detrimental microbes, and decreased levels of fiber-degrading bacteria. Lincomycin treatment also led to enrichment of metabolic pathways related to pathogenicity and deficiency of polysaccharide degradation in finishing swine, indicating severe disruption of the commensal microbiota.

Antibiotic prescription practices and opinions regarding antimicrobial resistance among veterinarians in Kentucky, USA

Agricola Odoi et al.

Summary: The survey revealed that most veterinarians believe inappropriate antimicrobial use contributes to antimicrobial resistance development. Facilities with prescription policies were associated with higher compliance rates, indicating the importance of implementing such policies to combat antimicrobial resistance. Continued professional education can help improve prescription practices and antimicrobial stewardship among veterinarians.

Effects of acute heat stress on salivary metabolites in growing pigs: an analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics profiling

Byeonghyeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute heat stress on the saliva metabolome in pigs and identified potential biomarkers. The results showed alterations in metabolites related to energy and protein, with saliva samples proving to be a noninvasive method for evaluating heat-stressed pigs.
