External Beam Radiation Therapy for Primary Liver Cancers: An ASTRO Clinical Practice Guideline

Smith Apisarnthanarax et al.

Summary: This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for external beam radiation therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, covering indications, techniques, outcomes, and emphasizing multidisciplinary care. Future studies should focus on defining the role of EBRT in the context of liver directed and systemic therapies.

BCLC strategy for prognosis prediction and treatment recommendation: The 2022 update

Maria Reig et al.

Summary: There have been significant advances in the treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma since the last update in 2018. However, some interventions still lack sufficient data for clinical incorporation, and personalized clinical management requires consideration of multiple parameters.

Radiotherapy to the prostate for men with metastatic prostate cancer in the UK and Switzerland: Long-term results from the STAMPEDE randomised controlled trial

Chris Parker et al.

Summary: This study suggests that radiotherapy to the prostate can improve overall survival for patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer and low metastatic burden, without affecting their quality of life. However, it does not provide the same benefit for patients with high metastatic burden.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma: From infancy to ongoing maturity

Shirley Lewis et al.

Summary: This review discusses the treatment modalities for hepatocellular carcinoma, including liver transplant, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The role of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma has been refined and adopted in recent years, but there is currently a lack of high-quality level I evidence supporting its use.

Safety and Survival Rates Associated With Ablative Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Patients With Oligometastatic Cancer A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Eric J. Lehrer et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis shows that stereotactic ablative radiotherapy is relatively safe and clinically beneficial in patients with oligometastatic cancer, with low rates of toxic effects and acceptable survival rates. Further research is needed to validate these findings.

Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Radiosensitization Strategies and Radiation-Immunotherapy Combination

Luis A. Perez-Romasanta et al.

Summary: Radiotherapy is becoming increasingly important in the multidisciplinary treatment of liver cancer, particularly for patients who are not eligible for surgery. The optimal use of radiotherapy and its combination with other treatments for liver cancer are still unknown, but combining radiotherapy with chemotherapy, targeted therapy, nanoparticles, and immunotherapy shows promise in enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Further research is needed to evaluate and consolidate these promising therapies for liver cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
