A state-of-the-art review on the MicroRNAs roles in hematopoietic stem cell aging and longevity

Geovanny Genaro Reivan Ortiz et al.

Summary: Aging is a biological process that leads to a decrease in the organism's standard of living due to time-related cellular and functional impairments. Recent advances in aging investigation have revealed that the rate of senescence can be regulated through genetic pathways and biological processes. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) maintain blood generation throughout an organism's lifetime but are also affected by the senescence process, resulting in a decline in their capabilities. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in controlling HSCs and can modulate senescence and age-associated diseases.

Shih-Tsung Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the interrelationships between the age of onset, frailty, anti-diabetic medications and clinical outcomes in people with diabetes mellitus (DM). The proportion of frailty increased with age at diagnosis amongst people with incident DM and the mFI scores increased significantly during the 10-year follow-up. Frailty assessment and management should be implemented into routine diabetes care.

PRMT5 up-regulation improves myocardial hypertrophy by mediating E2F-1/NF-KB/NLRP3 pathway

Limin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of PRMT5 in myocardial hypertrophy and found that overexpression of PRMT5 could reduce myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Knockdown of PRMT5 had the opposite effect. PRMT5 regulated the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome by modulating the E2F-1/NF-KB pathway, thereby attenuating myocardial hypertrophy.

Jennifer E. Lutomski et al.

Summary: As populations age, multimorbidity becomes increasingly common. This study identified five common patterns of chronic diseases in older persons and examined their effect on quality of life over a one-year period. The results showed that these patterns did not have a significant impact on quality of life.

Goals of older hospitalized patients with multimorbidity

Sanne Tent et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the treatment goals of older hospitalized patients with multimorbidity and compare them to those of older hospitalized patients without multimorbidity. It was found that there were no significant differences in treatment goals between patients with and without multimorbidity, but approximately 41% of patients mentioned goals that were unrelated to their diseases. This emphasizes the importance of healthcare professionals eliciting treatment goals from patients within hospital care to provide integrated care.

Silencing of IGF2BP1 restrains ox-LDL-induced lipid accumulation and inflammation by reducing RUNX1 expression and promoting autophagy in macrophages

Mingxin Liu et al.

Summary: IGF2BP1 plays a role in promoting foam cell formation in atherosclerosis, and its silencing can attenuate lipid accumulation and inflammation, as well as enhance autophagy. RUNX1, which is known to inhibit autophagy, interacts with IGF2BP1. Therefore, the IGF2BP1/RUNX1 axis may be a potential therapeutic target.

The association between multimorbidity and mobility disability-free life expectancy in adults aged 85 years and over: A modelling study in the Newcastle 85+cohort

Laurie E. Davies et al.

Summary: This study found that multimorbidity is a significant determinant of mobility disability and the number of years spent living with it in individuals aged 85 and older. Increasing long-term conditions were associated with a higher risk of incident mobility disability, reduced chances of recovery from this state, and an increased risk of death with mobility disability. The findings highlight the importance of preventing multimorbidity and maintaining independence in older populations.

Relationship of miRNA-126 and miRNA-122 expression with type 2 diabetes mellitus and related glucose metabolism parameters: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yaling He et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the relationship between miR-126 and miR-122 expression and the risk of T2DM as well as related glucose metabolism parameters. The results showed that higher miR-126 expression was associated with lower T2DM risk, fasting blood glucose levels, and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), while higher miR-122 expression was correlated with higher fasting blood glucose levels and HOMA-IR. These findings have significant clinical and public health implications for screening and controlling glucose metabolic disorders, insulin resistance, and T2DM development.

Role of noncoding RNAs and untranslated regions in cancer: A review

Yiping Zhang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role and importance of ncRNAs in cancer, including miRNAs, lncRNAs, circRNAs, and UTRs. ncRNAs function as tumor suppressors or oncogenes, interfering with different axes and pathways involved in cancer progression, with their characteristic expression allowing them to be used as biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapeutic candidates. Furthermore, there is a complex network of interactions between ncRNAs, which is crucial for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Circulating miR-21, miR-29a, and miR-126 are associated with premature death risk due to cancer and cardiovascular disease: the JACC Study

Summary: This study found that high levels of circulating miR-21 and miR-29a were significantly associated with an increased risk of total death, cancer death, and CVD death, while individuals with low levels of circulating miR-126 were more likely to experience total death. This suggests that circulating miRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers for early detection of high-risk individuals.

Summary: Inflammaging is a key concept in understanding how aging contributes to the development of age-related diseases, with a focus on the role of miRNAs in regulating inflammatory pathways. The assessment of individual genetic make-up alone is insufficient to depict the trajectories of age-related inflammation, and studies have shown that circulating inflammamiRs could be used to measure the degree of inflammaging.
