Age at gonadectomy, sex, and breed size affect risk of canine overweight and obese outcomes: a retrospective cohort study using data from United States primary care veterinary clinics

Valerie A. Benka et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the risk of developing overweight or obese body condition score (BCS) in gonadectomized dogs versus intact dogs, and to examine the impact of age at gonadectomy on overweight or obese outcomes among sterilized dogs. The results showed that gonadectomy increased the risk of developing overweight or obese condition for most dogs compared to intact dogs. Unlike previous studies, the hazard ratios for overweight or obese were higher in gonadectomized males than females. The risk of overweight or obese varied according to breed size but not in a linear manner. Sterilizing dogs at 1 year old tended to result in a lower risk of overweight or obese compared to sterilizing them later. The comparative risk of overweight or obese among dogs gonadectomized at 6 months versus 1 year varied depending on breed size. Overall patterns for obesity related to size were similar to patterns in the overweight or obese analysis.

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Disease Associations of Overweight and Obesity in Dogs that Visited the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis from January 2006 to December 2015

Chih-Fan Chiang et al.

Summary: Overweight and obesity in dogs have negative impacts on their health and quality of life. Studies conducted in different canine communities have shown that these conditions are prevalent and associated with factors such as neutering, breed types, and certain diseases. A study conducted at the University of California, Davis analyzed data from 40,038 dogs and found that the overall prevalence of overweight and obesity was 21.1% and 20.2% respectively. Neutered, female, middle-aged or senior dogs, as well as certain breeds and orthopedic diseases, were found to be at higher risk for overweight and obesity.

Proportion and risk factors for death by euthanasia in dogs in the UK

Camilla Pegram et al.

Summary: This study investigated the demographic and clinical factors associated with euthanasia compared to unassisted death in dogs using primary-care clinical data. The results showed that a large majority of dogs faced euthanasia decisions due to factors such as poor quality of life, undesirable behavior, and spinal cord disorder. Breed, larger bodyweight, and increasing age were also identified as additional risk factors for euthanasia.
