Summary: The Cenomanian Smail Marls Formation in the northern Aures Range near Batna, Algeria, contains fossiliferous deposits with diverse benthic macrofauna, mainly bivalves such as Maghrebella forgemoli. The abundance zone of Maghrebella forgemoli is found in the higher levels of the Lower Cenomanian and represents a circalittoral interval with low energy, soft substrata, and cold temperatures. The distribution of Maghrebella forgemoli in the Batna Mountains indicates bathymetric variation influenced by tectonic activity and tilted blocks.

Oyster-dominated macrobenthic associations in the Cenomanian of Djebel Bouarif (Aures Mountains, Northeastern Algeria)

Summary: In the Batna area of Algeria, the Cenomanian is represented by the Smail Marls Formation, which contains a diverse benthic macrofauna. The mac-rofaunal communities were analyzed using several statistical methods and five distinct associations were recognized. The dominance of high-energy opportunistic oyster species within the soft marly sediments is related to their adaptive strategies, and changes in community structure are influenced by sea-level fluctuations and sedimentation rates.

Summary: The Cenomanian/Turonian strata of the Kasserine area in Tunisia show a unique sedimentological and paleontological pattern, with the dominance of oyster bivalves in macrofaunal communities. By identifying three marker ammonite species, the studied interval was subdivided into three biozones. The macrofaunal diversity decreases over time in the Cenomanian/Turonian strata.

CENOMANIAN BIVALVES FROM BATNA MOUNTAINS (SAHARAN ATLAS, NE ALGERIA)

Summary: In the Batna Mountains, the Cenomanian Marnes de Smail Formation yielded fossil deposits dominated by bivalves. A total of 35 bivalve species were identified, with 5 of them being reported for the first time in the study area. The distribution of these fossils provides interesting insights into the marine paleoenvironment of the Cenomanian times, corresponding to the Tethys Realm.
