A Machine Learning Approach for Rainfall Estimation Integrating Heterogeneous Data Sources

Massimo Guarascio et al.

Summary: This study proposes a machine learning-based methodology using ensemble methods for rainfall estimation, which integrates information from different remote sensing measurements and provides accurate estimates in areas where rain gauges are not available. Experimental results in the Calabria region of Italy show a significant improvement compared to the Kriging with external drift method in terms of both probability of detection and mean-square error.

Long-term reconstruction of satellite-based precipitation, soil moisture, and snow water equivalent in China

Wencong Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a daily 0.1-degree dataset of precipitation, soil moisture, and snow water equivalent in China from 1981 to 2017 using global background data, on-site observations, and satellite-based data. The reconstructed dataset performs better in southern and eastern China and provides valuable information for future investigations of hydrological processes.

Infilling methods for monthly precipitation records with poor station network density in Subtropical Argentina

Santiago Hurtado et al.

Summary: In Subtropical Argentina, the need for continuous and reliable precipitation records for serious climatological research is emphasized. The performance of multiple interpolation methods was evaluated, with Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) standing out as the best method for infilling precipitation records despite the generally poor station network density in the region.

Evaluation of Extreme Precipitation Based on Three Long-Term Gridded Products over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Qingshan He et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of three gridded datasets in detecting extreme precipitation events over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 1981 to 2014, finding that all three datasets showed acceptable representation of extreme precipitation events in the region. CMFD outperformed the other datasets in capturing the spatiotemporal patterns of most extreme precipitation indices.
