Revisiting foliar diagnosis for oil palm potassium nutrition

Emmanuelle Lamade et al.

Summary: Oil palm, a potassium-demanding tree, requires fertilisation throughout its life cycle. The commonly used index for monitoring potassium fertilization is potassium content in leaflets (%K), but uncertainty remains regarding the most responsive organs and the need for separate response curves due to different conditions. Our study investigated potassium responses of oil palm trees in four different progenies, identifying phosphorus and %K in rachis as potential indicators of yield. By combining mineral contents using multivariate analysis, we successfully predicted fresh fruit bunch yield independent of progeny.

Agronomy explains large yield gaps in smallholder oil palm fields

Juan Pablo Monzon et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of agronomic management on low productivity in independent smallholder fields of oil palm production in Indonesia. Through analysis of data from 977 fields, it is found that agronomic practices, including nutrient management, harvest interval, weed control, and pruning, significantly contribute to yield gaps. Improving agronomic management can help smallholders increase yield and profit.

Multi-species rotational grazing of small ruminants regenerates undergrowth vegetation while controlling weeds in the oil palm silvopastoral system

Kamil Azmi Tohiran et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of small ruminant grazing on undergrowth vegetation in oil palm plantations. It was found that multi-species grazing effectively suppressed unwanted weeds, while single-species grazing increased undesirable undergrowth. Therefore, the use of multi-species grazing is a practical approach to manage undergrowth vegetation in oil palm plantations.

The use of oil palm empty fruit bunches as a soil amendment to improve growth and yield of crops. A meta-analysis

Michael Osei Adu et al.

Summary: Research shows that using different forms of EFB can significantly improve crop growth and yield, with the best results observed when EFB are used as mulch, biochar, or compost added to the soil. The growth and yield advantages compared to unamended soils are influenced by factors such as the location of the experiment, soil texture, and form of EFB applied.

Influence of weather and endogenous cycles on spatiotemporal yield variation in oil palm

Juan P. Monzon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between weather and endogenous factors with fresh fruit bunches (FFB) yield in well-managed oil palm plantations in Indonesia. Water stress was found to be the key factor accounting for the spatial and/or temporal variation in FFB yield. The study also highlighted the negative relationship between yield and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and yield and water-use efficiency at the block level.

Slowing deforestation in Indonesia follows declining oil palm expansion and lower oil prices

David L. A. Gaveau et al.

Summary: This study estimated the impact of oil palm plantations on natural forests in Indonesia using satellite imagery and sample-based error calibration. Over the course of 19 years, the area covered by oil palm doubled, reaching 16.24 million hectares, exceeding official estimates. Forest area declined by 11%, with 32% ultimately converted into oil palm. Industrial plantations had a greater impact than smallholder plantings.

Improving economic and environmental outcomes in oil palm smallholdings: The relationship between mulching, soil properties and yields

Katrin Rudolf et al.

Summary: The study estimated the relationship between EFB mulching and yields, soil properties in smallholder oil palm plantations, and analyzed the determinants of smallholders' EFB application. Results showed that regional EFB supply and farmers' wealth were correlated with smallholder EFB mulching, which was associated with higher yields and SOC contents. Promoting EFB mulching as best management practice could contribute to more sustainable oil palm systems.

Investigating the links between management practices and economic performances of smallholders' oil palm plots. A case study in Jambi province, Indonesia

Romane Mettauer et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate which smallholder farming systems optimize profitability at the plot scale. Using multivariate statistical analysis, two typologies based on agricultural practices and economic performance were defined and crossed to understand the links between them at the plot level. It was found that despite initial plot homogeneity during planting phase, ex-plasma smallholders can develop very diversified management practices.

Fostering a climate-smart intensification for oil palm

Juan P. Monzon et al.

Summary: Oil palm production in Indonesia has significantly expanded through conversion of natural ecosystems to agricultural land. This study highlights the large yield gaps between large and smallholder farms, indicating that improved management practices could increase production while protecting fragile ecosystems. This research emphasizes the importance of intensifying existing plantations and limiting expansion to save forests and peatlands, and reduce carbon emissions.

Oil palm and structural transformation of agriculture in Indonesia

Summary: The adoption of oil palm contributes to the structural transformation of agriculture in Indonesia, leading to an increase in average farm sizes and off-farm income for households. However, it does not increase the likelihood of employment in manufacturing or services, highlighting the need for more lucrative non-agricultural employment opportunities in rural areas.

Summary: Expansion of oil palm cultivation in degraded areas of the Brazilian Amazon has increased. Cultivation in diversified agroforestry systems may be a sustainable alternative to monocultures. Organic fertilization and species diversity in agroforestry systems may lead to improved soil quality compared to monocultures.
