Non-incremental response evaluation in geometrically nonlinear structural dynamics using a space-time stiffness operator

Tahar Arjoune et al.

Summary: This contribution introduces a proper generalized decomposition-based nonlinear solver for efficient solution of geometrically nonlinear dynamic problems. The solution is constructed as a sum of dyadic products of space and time modes, and the sum is truncated once the required accuracy is achieved. This article proposes an algorithm that linearizes the residual vectors around the currently known solution over the entire space-time domain, and separates the vectorized tangent stiffness matrices in space and time using singular value decomposition. The left and right singular vectors are reshaped into matrices to separate the space-time stiffness operator, which can be integrated into the alternating fixed-point algorithm to compute couples of space and time modes.

Phase-field modeling of fatigue coupled to cyclic plasticity in an energetic formulation

Jacinto Ulloa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a modeling framework to describe the driving mechanisms of cyclic failure in brittle and ductile materials, including cyclic plasticity and fatigue crack growth. The coupled model embeds two distinctive fatigue effects, capturing the characteristic features of low-cycle fatigue driven by plastic strains accumulation and high-cycle fatigue driven by free energy accumulation. The interplay between these mechanisms allows to describe a wide range of cyclic responses under both force loading and displacement loading.

A Newmark space-time formulation in structural dynamics

Franz Bamer et al.

Summary: This paper presents a space-time formulation of the Newmark integration scheme for linear damped structures under harmonic and transient excitations. The dynamic system is represented by one algebraic space-time equation which is then solved via a fixed point algorithm. The solution is iteratively assembled by enrichments, each being decomposed by a dyadic product of spatial and temporal enrichment vectors.

On the variational modeling of non-associative plasticity

Jacinto Ulloa et al.

Summary: This work extends the energetic formulation to non-associative plasticity models, providing a systematic variational approach. By introducing a suitable state-dependent dissipation potential, a variational structure for non-associative plasticity is achieved, allowing specific models to be rewritten in variational form, showcasing the flexibility of the formulation.

A separated representation involving multiple time scales within the Proper Generalized Decomposition framework

Angelo Pasquale et al.

Summary: The paper presents an alternative approach to solving partial differential equations by using a time-separated representation that allows for fine time discretization without impacting computational efficiency. By transforming the time coordinate into multidimensional time through separated coordinates, the method circumvents prohibitive meshes and captures different scales effectively. The formulation is explored and verified numerically on thermal and elastodynamic problems, showcasing its effectiveness in handling multiple time scales.
