Offshore aquaculture of finfish: Big expectations at sea

Bernat Morro et al.

Summary: In recent years, offshore aquaculture has gained momentum with the production of marine fish species being relocated offshore. This review revisits past predictions and expectations with a focus on oceanographic features, fish diseases, and operational challenges. Understanding the physical capabilities of farmed fish species, studying potential site oceanography, and developing an economic plan are key to successful offshore aquaculture.

Identifying Scaling Pathways and Research Priorities for Kelp Aquaculture Nurseries Using a Techno-Economic Modeling Approach

Struan Coleman et al.

Summary: The aquaculture of seaweeds is growing worldwide, but the cost and barriers of nursery production are hindering its expansion. Through a techno-economic model study, this research identified key factors such as reducing grow-out duration, increasing labor capacity, and optimizing system design. It also suggested the importance of expanding gametophyte culture and implementing policies to protect wild kelp populations.

Techno-economic analysis of a recirculating tilapia-lettuce aquaponics system

Natalia Zappernick et al.

Summary: Recirculating aquaponics systems (RAS) are an economic alternative for providing healthy foods in food deserts. This study evaluated the profitability of a commercial-scale tilapia-lettuce RAS in the U.S. Midwest using techno-economic analysis. The analysis showed that labor and greenhouse costs were key factors affecting profitability.

Genotype by environment interactions of harvest growth traits for barramundi (Lates calcarifer) commercially farmed in marine vs. freshwater conditions

Jose A. Domingos et al.

Summary: Barramundi, a commercially important tropical aquaculture species, shows adaptability to different salinities, but selective breeding programs should consider the impact of genotype by environment interactions. This study reveals weak to moderate re-ranking of genotypes for harvest growth traits in L. calcarifer farmed in marine and freshwater conditions, suggesting the importance of considering GxE interactions in breeding programs.
