Biotic and abiotic drivers of stemflow carbon enrichment ratio in tropical trees

Vanessa Alves Mantovani et al.

Summary: Tree bark structure and crown area, as well as maximum rainfall intensity and seasonality, play important roles in the carbon input via stemflow in a neotropical forest. Stemflow is a neglected water path in the forest that transports nutrients from the canopy to the forest floor, affecting biogeochemical processes and nutrient redistribution in forest ecosystems. Our findings demonstrate the significance of tree structural features and meteorological conditions in influencing the carbon enrichment ratios in stemflow, highlighting the importance of stemflow as a relevant source of carbon input in tropical forest soils.

Relationship between soil CO2 fluxes and soil moisture: Anaerobic sources explain fluxes at high water content

Linden Fairbairn et al.

Summary: Soil moisture is an important variable in predicting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Previous studies have focused on aerobic respiration as the source of CO2, ignoring anaerobic processes. This study conducted experiments at different moisture levels under both oxic and anoxic conditions. The results showed that moderate moisture levels resulted in maximum CO2 fluxes, but substantial CO2 fluxes were also measured at fully saturated conditions. Methane (CH4) fluxes increased over time in anoxic conditions. A kinetic model was proposed to represent both aerobic and anaerobic CO2 production. This study highlights the importance of considering anaerobic reaction pathways in predicting soil CO2 production at high moisture levels.

The inverted forest: Aboveground and notably large belowground carbon stocks and their drivers in Brazilian savannas

Marcela C. N. S. Terra et al.

Summary: Savannas in South America contribute significantly to terrestrial net primary productivity and carbon storage. A unique dataset of 21 Cerrado sites in Southeastern Brazil was used to assess the patterns of above and belowground carbon stocks. Environmental factors and tree diversity had significant effects on carbon stocks, with belowground carbon storage being particularly important. The findings highlight the need for better management and protection of the Cerrado.

Nitrogen deposition in low-phosphorus tropical forests benefits soil C sequestration but not stabilization

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The availability of soil nitrogen and phosphorus has a significant impact on the stability of soil organic carbon. This study examined how different fractions of soil organic carbon and the soil microbial communities in a tropical forest are affected by soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability. The results showed that phosphorus addition increased soil microbial activities and promoted the decomposition of recalcitrant soil organic carbon, while nitrogen addition increased the abundance of active soil organic carbon.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that root growth has a greater impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration than root decomposition. The experiment found that the increase in SOC due to root growth was higher than that caused by dead root decomposition.

Effective forest-based climate change mitigation requires our best science COMMENT

Kristina J. Anderson-Teixeira et al.

Summary: California's Cap-and-Trade Program sets a limit on major greenhouse gas emissions and allows the purchase of carbon credits for excess emissions. However, using mean forest carbon stocks from ecological supersections may create perverse incentives for project developers, leading to over-crediting and nonadditional offsets. Ensuring the additionality of projects is crucial for effective carbon mitigation efforts.

Throughfall spatial variability in a neotropical forest: Have we correctly accounted for time stability

Vanessa A. Mantovani et al.

Summary: The complexity of rainfall-canopy interactions is likely to increase under extreme weather events. The spatial variability of throughfall (TF) is less time stable during droughts, and forest structure plays a significant role in the time stability of TF variability.

Soil organic carbon stocks and quality in small-scale tropical, sub-humid and semi-arid watersheds under shrubland and dry deciduous forest in southwestern India

Severin-Luca Belle et al.

Summary: The study found that soil organic carbon stocks and quality in southwestern India are influenced by various factors including vegetation, geology, and soil properties. Importantly, a significant portion of organic carbon is stored in soils below 30 cm, highlighting the importance of tropical subsoils.

The effect of ecological restoration methods on carbon stocks in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Anani Morilha Zanini et al.

Summary: Restoring degraded areas is crucial for reestablishing environmental services in the Atlantic Forest. This study assessed carbon stocks, content, and isotope in 5-year old restoration sites using different methods. Although total carbon stock did not show significant differences, soil was identified as the largest carbon pool, emphasizing the importance of sampling every pool for accurate estimation. The findings highlight the significance of monitoring and analyzing various carbon pools in restoration areas to better understand carbon sequestration processes and contribute to broader conservation efforts.

Cleber R. Souza et al.

Summary: Long-term monitoring of a degraded secondary AF fragment shows a shift towards late successional stages with increasing biomass, decreasing tree density, and an increase in late-successional species. Species richness and dominant species composition remain stable, highlighting the important role of small secondary AF fragments in ecosystem service provision.

Study of an abnormal occurrence of Oxisols in strongly undulated relief in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil, with support of pXRF and geomorphology

Fernanda Almeida Bocoli et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the rare occurrence of Oxisols in undulating relief in Muzambinho municipality, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry, combined with geomorphology, was used to assess elemental dynamics and relief enhancement of the soils. The weathering degree values of the soils decrease down the hillslope, indicating silica enrichment through runoff and subsuperficial water flux in the lower landscape positions.
