Multi-walled carbon nanotube induced liver injuries possibly by promoting endoplasmic reticulum stress in Cyprinus carpio

Xiaochan Gao et al.

Summary: The exposure of juvenile common carp to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) caused dose-dependent alterations in the pathological morphology of liver tissues, including nuclear deformation, chromatin condensation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) disorderly arrangement, mitochondria vacuolation, and mitochondrial membrane destruction. Furthermore, MWCNTs induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and initiated apoptosis in the liver tissue of common carp by activating the PERK/eIF2α pathway.

Multiple effects of ZnO nanoparticles on goldfish (Carassius auratus): Skin mucus, gut microbiota and stable isotope composition

Danni Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ZnO nanoparticles (nZnO) on the skin mucus and gut microbiota of goldfish, as well as the elements turnover and metabolic variations. The results showed that nZnO exposure significantly impacted the levels of biomarkers in the skin mucus, and reduced the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut while increasing the presence of pathogens. Integration analysis revealed concentration-dependent effects of nZnO on the skin mucus, highlighting the discrepancy in toxicity pathways and effects on different tissues. This work enhances our understanding of the comprehensive toxicity of nZnO on aquatic organisms.

Efficiency of hematological, enzymological and oxidative stress biomarkers of Cyprinus carpio to an emerging organic compound (alphamethrin) toxicity

Mathan Ramesh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity of Alphamethrin on non-target organism Cyprinus carpio by assessing the efficiency of hematological, enzymological, and antioxidants biomarkers. The results showed significant impairments in the studied biomarkers in Alphamethrin-treated groups compared with the control group. Alphamethrin could cause multiorgan toxicity on aquatic organisms at the μg/L level.

Gut microbiota contribute to Methamphetamine-induced cardiotoxicity in mouse model

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study established a METH administration model in mice and investigated the connection between METH-induced cardiotoxicity and gut microbiota. The results showed that METH exposure altered signaling pathways in heart tissue and changed the composition of gut microbiota. Eliminating gut microbiota relieved METH-induced cardiotoxicity, while transferring gut microbiota from METH-exposed mice to healthy mice resulted in cardiac injury.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) exhibit immune toxicity to crucian carp (Carassius carassius) by neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release and oxidative stress

Hongrong Hong et al.

Summary: This study found that zinc oxide nanoparticles have a toxic effect on the liver of crucian carp. The nanoparticles can cause abnormal biochemical indexes, inflammation, and physiological changes in the liver. DNase I can prevent this toxic effect.

Toxicity of nanomixtures to human macrophages: Joint action of silver and polystyrene nanoparticles

Krunoslav Ilic et al.

Summary: The use of nano-enabled products has many benefits, but it also raises concerns about the release of nanoparticles into the environment. This study evaluated the combined effect of silver (AgNP) and polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNP) on human macrophages, and the results showed increased negative effects such as apoptosis, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction when the two types of nanoparticles were combined.

Evaluation of the combined toxicity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and cadmium on earthworms in soil using multi-level biomarkers

Xiaoxia Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined toxicity of MWCNTs and Cd on earthworms, revealing an antagonistic interaction between the two at relatively low effects. The mixture of MWCNTs and Cd led to significant changes in metabolites and activities of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes in earthworms. The toxic action mode of the mixture on earthworms was related to oxidative injury and disruptions in amino acid, purine, and pyrimidine metabolism, and the urea cycle.
