Steering the oxygen reduction reaction pathways of N-carbon hollow spheres by heteroatom doping

Jiarun Cheng et al.

Summary: An original strategy of heteroatom (P and S) doping was reported to manipulate ORR selectivity of N-doped hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (N-HMCS). Heteroatom doping can modulate the electronic structure and the proportion/configuration of doped N in N-HMCS, as well as regulate the pathway of ORR. The presence of rich-graphitic N sites and electron-rich C-P bond domains in N,P-HMCS act as electron donors, making *OOH more unstable and easier to desorb into H2O2. Conversely, the introduction of highly electronegative S hinders the desorption of *OOH through a strong interaction with the electron-deficient C-S bond domain, leading to the breakage of the O-O bond and promoting four-electron ORR along with the rich-pyridinic N receptor site. The activity and kinetics mechanism of the reaction show a positive correlation with the proportion of graphitic N, indicating that graphitic N is the primary active site with a much faster electron transfer capacity.

Insight into the Mechanism of Axial Ligands Regulating the Catalytic Activity of Fe-N4 Sites for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Kuang-Min Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of axial ligands on the ORR catalytic activity of Fe-N-4 by using poly(iron phthalocyanine) as a model electrocatalyst. It reveals that the ORR activity of Fe-N-4 sites can be regulated by tuning the field strength of the axial ligands, and it is related to the energy level gap between OH p(x)p(y) and Fe 3dz2.

Strategic Modulation of Target-Specific Isolated Fe,Co Single-Atom Active Sites for Oxygen Electrocatalysis Impacting High Power Zn-Air Battery

Subhajit Sarkar et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional electrocatalyst with target-specific Fe-N-4/C and Co-N-4/C isolated active sites was developed, showing a symbiotic effect on overall oxygen electrocatalysis performances. The dualism of N-dopants and binary metals lowered the d-band centers of Fe and Co in the catalyst, improving the overpotential of the catalytic processes. The Fe, Co, N-C catalyst demonstrated a high areal power density in both liquid and solid-state Zn-air batteries, making it a suitable candidate for air cathode material in ZABs.

Engineering High-Spin State Cobalt Cations in Spinel Zinc Cobalt Oxide for Spin Channel Propagation and Active Site Enhancement in Water Oxidation

Yuanmiao Sun et al.

Summary: Through density functional theory calculations, it was found that the OER activity of spinel zinc cobalt oxide is hindered by the presence of low-spin state cobalt cations, but increasing the spin state of cobalt cations can promote spin-selected charge transport and enhance active sites for intermediate adsorption. By controlling the calcination temperature to achieve high-spin state cobalt cations in ZnCo2O4, the catalytic activity was successfully optimized.

Understanding the inter-site distance effect in single-atom catalysts for oxygen electroreduction

Zhaoyu Jin et al.

Summary: Regulating the site density of single-atom catalysts can significantly improve electrocatalysis performance, such as the oxygen reduction reaction. Strong interactions between adjacent Fe-N-4 moieties can enhance intrinsic ORR activity, with a marked improvement continuing until neighbouring Fe atoms approach as close as about 0.7 nm. Identifying the fundamental mechanism of the inter-site distance effect in Fe-N-4 catalysts may maximize the potential of densely populated SACs.
