Photon, charged particles, and neutron shielding properties of natural rubber/SnO2 composites

W. Chaiphaksa et al.

Summary: The study developed a flexible shielding material based on natural rubber composites for radiation shielding. By incorporating tin oxide (SnO2) with natural rubber (NR), the modulus, hardness, and specific gravity of NR improved, while the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased. The WinXCom program was used to calculate theoretical gamma ray shielding parameters, and the Compton scattering technique was used to measure experimental values. The results showed that the NR/SnO2 composites are suitable for use as flexible radiation shielding materials.

Development of Sustainable Radiation-Shielding Blend Using Natural Rubber/NBR, and Bismuth Filler

Ola Aziz et al.

Summary: This study produced composite materials using a combination of natural rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, along with nano-silica-loaded bismuth (III) oxide. The properties of the composites at different concentrations of Bi2O3 were tested, including gamma attenuation properties and mechanical properties. The results showed that the composites with a concentration of 20 phr exhibited the highest tensile strength and elongation at break. The composites also showed potential for radiation protection applications.

Novel flexible and lead-free gamma radiation shielding nanocomposites based on LDPE/SBR blend and BaWO4/B2O3 heterostructures

Said M. Kassem et al.

Summary: Flexible lead-free radiation shielding nanocomposite films based on LDPE/SBR doped with BaWO4/B2O3 heterostructures were successfully prepared. The nanocomposite films showed enhanced thermal stability and mass attenuation coefficient with increased BaWO4/B2O3 loading. The dependency of effective atomic and electron numbers on BaWO4/B2O3 content was investigated. Overall, these nanocomposite films are suitable for radiation shielding applications.

Cellular Bi2O3/natural rubber composites for light-weight and lead-free gamma-shielding materials and their properties under gamma irradiation

Phakamat Limarun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a radiation-protective filler and blowing agents on the properties of cellular natural rubber composites, finding that the addition of bismuth oxide enhanced gamma-shielding ability but lowered tensile properties, while blowing agents reduced density and linear attenuation coefficient but increased mass attenuation coefficient. The developed composites not only showed efficient gamma-shielding and mechanical properties but also offered comfort and light-weight to users, potentially reducing discomforts caused by heavier conventional radiation-protective equipment.
