Mechanisms, performance, and the impact on microbial structure of direct interspecies electron transfer for enhancing anaerobic digestion-A review

Likui Feng et al.

Summary: In recent years, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) has gained significant attention as it accelerates methane production via organics reduction during anaerobic digestion (AD) process. DIET-based syntrophic relationships can occur through pili and proteins in microorganisms as well as conductive materials. This study summarizes the mechanisms, applications, and microbial structures of carbon-based and iron-based conductive materials during AD reactor operations, while also analyzing the effectiveness of DIET through conductive materials. The challenges of using conductive materials to enhance methane production are also discussed, aiming to provide insights for full-scale DIET applications.

Long-term transformation of nanoscale zero-valent iron explains its biological effects in anaerobic digestion: From ferroptosis-like death to magnetite-enhanced direct electron transfer networks

Guoxiang You et al.

Summary: In this study, the aging effects of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) on methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion were investigated. The addition of nZVI initially inhibited methane production through iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and glutathione depletion. However, prolonged exposure led to a gradual recovery and even improved performance. It was found that the recovery was attributed to nZVI enhancing membrane rigidity and protecting anaerobes. Metagenomic analysis revealed that microbial cells adapted to nZVI aging by upregulating functional genes related to electron transfer networks, promoting cooperative behaviors among consortium members.

An ultra-small fluorescence zero-valent iron nanoclusters selectively kill gram-positive bacteria by promoting reactive oxygen species generation

Jidong Liu et al.

Summary: WHO has published a list of the most dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including Gram-positive bacteria related to serious infections. Nanomaterial-based approaches, such as ultra-small zero-valent iron nanoclusters (usZVIN), show promise in combating antimicrobial resistance. This study synthesized usZVIN, which selectively targets Gram-positive bacteria and triggers the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), providing a potential medical material candidate for fighting against Gram-positive bacterial infections.

How anaerobic sludge microbiome respond to different concentrations of nitrite, nitrate, and ammonium ions: a comparative analysis

Runhua Su et al.

Summary: High concentrations of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate can inhibit anaerobic wastewater treatment. The microbial mechanism in anaerobic sludge under such inhibition is not well understood. This study compared the shifts of microbial communities in anaerobic sludge under increasing levels of nitrite, nitrate, and ammonium ions. It was found that bacteria genera Kosmotoga and Brooklawnia dominated in all three high-stress inhibitory systems. Network analysis and redundancy analysis showed that nitrate and nitrite treatments decreased the modularity of anaerobic microorganisms.

Yijie Zhong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of zero valent iron (ZVI) particles with different sizes on anaerobic methane production and revealed the underlying mechanism. The results showed that ZVI particles of different sizes had different optimal dosages, and they could regulate key bacterial communities and gene expression, thus promoting methane production.

Membrane disruption boosts iron overload and endogenous oxidative stress to inactivate Escherichia coli by nanoscale zero-valent iron

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) causes an increase in intracellular iron concentrations, leading to the production of high levels of endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and the oxidative damage of DNA, resulting in the inactivation of E. coli cells. The close contact between nZVI and E. coli leads to increased permeabilization of the cytomembrane and iron overload, which enhances the efficiency of E. coli inactivation.

Wenfeng Ye et al.

Summary: The addition of zero-valent iron (ZVI) in anaerobic digestion systems has been shown to improve microbial activity and enhance the long-term stability of digesters, leading to higher methane production. However, challenges remain in designing efficient and cost-effective AD systems due to the variability in operation and digestion substrates. Further studies are needed to better utilize ZVI for enhanced AD performance under different conditions.

Nano zero-valent iron harms methanogenic archaea by interfering with energy conservation and methanogenesis

Yuanxu Song et al.

Summary: This study found that while all three forms of Fe-NPs caused oxidative stress and disruption of the cell surface of Methanosarcina acetivorans, only nZVI and SnZVI inhibited growth and methane production. The presence of Fe2+ in nFeS did not show any inhibitory effect. The research reveals a previously undisclosed harmful mechanism of nZVI on methanogenic archaea and enhances the understanding of potential negative effects of applying nZVI in anaerobic digestion.
