Constitutive modeling of brittle-ductile transition in porous rocks: formulation, identification and simulation

Sili Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a two-surface elastoplastic model that considers plastic shearing and plastic pore collapse for brittle-ductile transition behaviors of compressive stresses in porous rocks. It introduces a unified hardening/softening law for the pre-peak hardening and post-peak softening behaviors. The model captures the volumetric compressibility-dilatancy phenomenon and the plastic compaction response caused by non-hydrostatic stress. The proposed model is able to capture the main mechanical behaviors of investigated porous rocks, including strength nonlinearity, pressure sensitivity, strain hardening/softening, volumetric compaction/dilation, and brittle-ductile transition.

A constitutive model for anisotropic clay-rich rocks considering micro-structural composition

J. J. Zhao et al.

Summary: A new constitutive model is proposed in this paper for clay-rich rocks, which takes into account the mechanical behavior dependent on water saturation degree and the structural anisotropy commonly exhibited by sedimentary rocks. Unlike most phenomenological models, this model explicitly describes the impact of micro-structural composition on macroscopic mechanical behavior. The efficiency of the proposed model is evaluated through comparisons with experimental data from laboratory tests on Callovo-Oxfordian claystone.

Friction-damage coupled models and macroscopic strength criteria for ice-saturated frozen silt with crack asperity variation by a micromechanical approach

Lun-Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes physical friction-damage coupled models for ice-saturated frozen silt and derives macroscopic nonlinear strength criteria. By considering two material scales, the microstructure and plastic deformation mechanisms of the material are analyzed. Multiscale models are established based on damage and plasticity, with associated/nonassociated behavior considered. Numerical simulations and comparisons with experimental data demonstrate the accuracy and improvement of the nonassociated multiscale model in predicting volumetric deformation.
