Laser-texturing of stainless steel as a corrosion mitigation strategy for high-temperature molten salts applications under dynamic conditions

Luis Gonzalez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study investigates nanosecond laser micromachining as a potential technique for mitigating corrosion in molten carbonate salts under dynamic conditions. The results show that laser-treated samples exhibit significantly reduced corrosion compared to untreated samples when subjected to the flow of molten carbonate salts at 600℃ for 600 hours. Cross-sectional analysis reveals severe peeling in untreated samples and a 45% increase in corrosion rate compared to treated samples. ICP analysis shows that the concentrations of Cr and Mg in the salt are twofold and fourfold higher than those in treated samples. Laser treatment renders Cr and Mg less accessible to salt ions, particularly Li, resulting in improved corrosion resistance.

Temperature effect and alloying elements impact on the corrosion behaviour of the alloys exposed to molten carbonate environments for CSP application

M. T. de Miguel et al.

Summary: This research evaluated the impact of alloy composition and temperature on the corrosivity of ternary carbonate eutectic, highlighting non-linear corrosion extension with temperature changes and the influence of alloying elements. Nickel-based substrate showed catastrophic performance, while iron-based alloy demonstrated improved corrosion resistance.

Impact of temperature on corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels in solar salt for CSP application: An electrochemical study

Heng Li et al.

Summary: The compatibility between solar salt and structure materials in concentrated solar power (CSP) technology is affected by temperature, with higher temperatures leading to increased corrosion rates. The corrosion mechanisms of 304 and 316L stainless steels in solar salt vary with temperature, with the formation of a protective oxide layer observed in 316L stainless steel.

Effect of dynamic conditions on high-temperature corrosion of ternary carbonate salt for thermal energy storage applications

Luis Gonzalez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study compares the corrosion behavior of Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3 salt on SS310 under static and dynamic conditions. The dynamic experiment showed increased spallation of the corrosion layer, exposing a thin and non-uniform oxide scale containing chromium and increasing its dissolution into the salt. These results highlight the detrimental effect of dynamic conditions on the corrosivity of molten carbonate salt, emphasizing the need to consider it in the design of 3rd generation CSP plants.

Corrosion monitoring of 321H in contact with a quaternary molten salt for parabolic trough CSP plants

V. Encinas-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The corrosive behavior of stainless alloy 321H in contact with a quaternary salt mixture was assessed, showing that corrosion is controlled by ion transport through the oxide scale and indicating the presence of a protective layer mechanism. The electrochemical results led to an estimated corrosion rate for 321H steel, confirming its suitability as a structural material for CSP technology and the potential of the corrosion monitoring system for O&M processes.

Effect of pre-oxidation on hot corrosion resistance of HR3C stainless steel in sulfate salt with or without Fe2O3

Zheng Yu et al.

Summary: HR3C steel exhibits high oxidation resistance at high temperatures due to the formation of a dense chromium oxide scale, but hot corrosion occurs in the presence of sulfate salts. Pre-oxidation can enhance corrosion resistance, but when sulfate salts contain Fe2O3, hot corrosion becomes more severe and pre-oxidation has minimal effect on corrosion resistance.
