A review on production and implementation of hydrogen as a green fuel in internal combustion engines

Yew Heng Teoh et al.

Summary: Huge and continuously growing non-renewable energy consumption has led to a crisis in fossil fuel sources, while the concern about emissions from internal combustion engines has driven the search for alternative energy sources. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising solution for internal combustion engines, improving engine performance and reducing emissions. This review provides an overview of hydrogen utilization in spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, highlighting its benefits in terms of thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, energy consumption, and reduced exhaust emissions.

Effects of hydrogen addition on combustion, thermodynamics and emission performance of high compression ratio liquid methane gas engine

Jianqin Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the addition of hydrogen to LMG engine, finding that as hydrogen energy fraction (HEF) increases, combustion rate and cylinder pressure increase, while indicated thermal efficiency reaches a maximum between 8% and 12% HEF. Although hydrogen addition can increase combustion rate of the mixture gas, it also increases the detonation trend.

Computational studies of fuel injection strategies on natural gas combustion characteristics in direct-injection engines

Kang Pan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fuel injection duration, injector nozzle size, and injection angle can significantly impact natural gas combustion characteristics. Shorter injection duration reduces peak cylinder pressure and emissions, but insufficient injected fuel mass may lead to flame propagation failure. Injector nozzle size influences combustion type, with small nozzles inducing diffusion combustion and large nozzles inducing partially premixed combustion. Fuel injection angle affects combustion by modifying flame propagation from the glow plug shield.

Influence of the equivalence ratio on the knock and performance of a hydrogen direct injection internal combustion engine under different compression ratios

Yong Li et al.

Summary: This study found that a high compression ratio can significantly amplify the effect of the equivalence ratio on combustion and knock. For a compression ratio of 17.5, knock intensity increases more quickly with the rise in equivalence ratio and is more sensitive to ignition timing. However, at a compression ratio of 11, ignition timing is limited by knock about 4 degrees CA earlier than at a compression ratio of 17.5, resulting in more stable engine performance in the low-knock zone.
