Experimental and FEM study on the in-plane and out-plane loaded reversible dual-material bio-inspired lattice structures with improved energy absorption performance

Deepak Sharma et al.

Summary: The current study explores bio-inspired lattice structures derived from the architecture of a sea sponge, Euplectella aspergillum. These lattice structures are fabricated using the fused filament fabrication process. The study shows that the energy absorption performance of these structures depends on their stiffness. To improve the energy absorption capacity, the study combines hard and soft materials in the structure fabrication. Experimental and finite element studies demonstrate similar mechanical properties and deformation behavior. In-plane loaded structures exhibit a more stable response, while out-plane loaded structures show higher mean plateau stress, energy absorption, and efficiency. Dual-material fabricated structures show higher efficiency and improved performance without compromising reversibility.

A novel 3D printable multimaterial auxetic metamaterial with reinforced structure: Improved stiffness and retained auxetic behavior

Yutai Su et al.

Summary: A multimaterial strategy combined with structure innovation is adopted to enhance structural stiffness while retaining the auxetic behavior for auxetic metamaterials. A bimaterial reentrant structure with additional soft arch-like beams and hinges is proposed and investigated using experimental and simulation approaches. The results demonstrate that reducing the strength of the hinge significantly reduces the buckling issue of the beam/wall and minimizes the reduction of auxetic behavior due to increased stiffness. Thus, the strategy to enhance design flexibility for auxetic metamaterials is verified.

4D printed shape memory sandwich structures: experimental analysis and numerical modeling

A. Serjouei et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of smart sandwich structures with shape memory functionality through four-dimensional (4D) printing, allowing deformed structures to recover their original shape by simple heating. Experimental and simulation studies identify wall thickness, layer height, and nozzle temperature as critical parameters affecting compressive load and energy absorption rate. These findings are expected to guide the design and fabrication of 4D printed sandwich structures for energy absorption applications.

In-plane compressive behavior of a novel self-similar hierarchical honeycomb with design-oriented crashworthiness

Hongy Liang et al.

Summary: A novel center-vertex honeycomb (CVH) structure is proposed by adding smaller hexagons to the hexagonal honeycomb to enhance energy absorption capacity. CVH exhibits superior energy absorption performance compared to HH and other hierarchical honeycombs under quasi-static compression, making it a better choice for energy absorption applications.
