Diet Composition and Objectively Assessed Sleep Quality: A Narrative Review

Katherine Wilson et al.

Summary: Insufficient sleep is common in society and has negative health effects. Dietary modifications, particularly diets rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and anti-inflammatory nutrients and low in saturated fat, may improve sleep quality.

Disruption of the circadian rhythms and its relationship with pediatric obesity

Masanobu Kawai

Summary: The disruption of the circadian clock system can lead to metabolic complications, including obesity. Lifestyle factors, such as shift work, short sleep duration, and skipping breakfast, have been found to be associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders, particularly in children. However, the underlying mechanisms behind these associations are still not fully understood.

The relationship between diet and sleep in 2-y-old children: Results from Growing Up in New Zealand

Alejandra Rios-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between dietary practices and sleep in young children. The results show that high consumption of soft drinks/snacks/fast foods is associated with inadequate sleep and increased night waking, while high consumption of milk/cheese/yogurt is associated with increased odds of night waking. On the other hand, moderate or high vegetable intake is associated with decreased odds of night waking. Exposure to screens and heavy maternal cigarette smoking are also associated with inadequate sleep and increased night waking, respectively.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Energy Drinks and Sleep among Adolescents

Milena Tomanic et al.

Summary: Many adolescents worldwide struggle with meeting recommended sleep hours. This study explores the association between regular energy drink consumption and sufficient sleep in adolescents. It also examines the relationship between health-related behaviors and sleep time, categorized by gender. Findings show that regular energy drink intake is negatively associated with sufficient sleep in both boys and girls, while daily vegetable and water intake may increase sleep odds in boys, and sedative use may decrease the chances of sufficient sleep in girls.

Unhealthy Diet Is Associated With Poor Sleep in Preschool-Aged Children

Jennifer F. Holmes et al.

Summary: The study found that in preschool children, shorter nap duration was associated with more frequent fruit and vegetable consumption, shorter nighttime and 24-hr sleep durations were associated with more frequent fast food consumption, and shorter nighttime sleep and later sleep onset were associated with more frequent soda consumption. Ineffective parenting strategies may lead to child access to unhealthy foods, contributing to poor sleep outcomes. Encouraging healthier dietary habits and educating caregivers on reinforcing such practices may lead to better sleep outcomes in early childhood.

Sleep and Diet: Mounting Evidence of a Cyclical Relationship

Faris M. Zuraikat et al.

Summary: The two intrinsic factors in health, diet and sleep, are interconnected as insufficient sleep can negatively impact dietary intakes, while specific foods rich in tryptophan and melatonin can improve sleep quality. Adopting a healthful diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other sources of dietary tryptophan and melatonin can lead to favorable sleep outcomes. Clinical trials are necessary to confirm the causal impact of dietary patterns on sleep and to elucidate underlying mechanisms, but available data demonstrate a cyclical relationship between these lifestyle factors.
