1H NMR and EPR Spectroscopies Investigation of Alginate Cross-Linking by Divalent Ions

Anna A. Forysenkova et al.

Summary: This article investigates the mechanism and properties of the gel formation of alginate with different metal ions using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results show that the concentration of calcium and manganese ions does not affect their distribution in the alginate structure and the cross-linking density, while the number of strontium and copper ions affects the number of binding sites and cross-linking density. Therefore, the cross-linking of alginate is mainly influenced by the characteristics of specific ions, with the nature of the bond being less important.

Porous matrixes based on polyvinylpyrrolidone containing calcium phosphates for medical application

I. V. Fadeeva et al.

Summary: Several materials based on biocompatible polymers and calcium phosphates have been developed. The properties of these materials were studied using IR and EPR spectroscopies. It was found that the introduction of calcium phosphates into the polymer matrix decreased the material porosity and swelling. The results also showed that polyvinylpyrrolidone did not affect the formation of calcium phosphates. In vitro studies indicated that a composition containing polyvinylpyrrolidone and sodium alginate in equal ratio exhibited good biocompatibility and no cytotoxicity, making it a promising material for medical applications.

Survey of MRI Usefulness for the Clinical Assessment of Bone Microstructure

Enrico Soldati et al.

Summary: Bone microarchitecture provides valuable information for evaluating skeleton quality, with MRI being a non-invasive and non-ionizing tool that can assess bone structure and fracture risk. MRI applications such as MR spectroscopy and chemical shift encoding MRI offer additional biomarkers for assessing bone microarchitecture.

Composite Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Sodium Alginate-Hydroxyapatite Hydrogel Films for Bone Repair and Wound Dressings Applications

Inna Fadeeva et al.

Summary: The synthesis of biocompatible and bioresorbable composite materials with mineral constituents is challenging in regenerative medicine, as it can stimulate natural tissue growth and repair damaged parts. This study found that composite hydrogel films containing HA synthesized in situ exhibited acute cytotoxicity, while films with HA added ex situ promoted the viability of dental pulp stem cells. These developed composite hydrogel films are recommended for applications such as membranes in osteoplastic surgery and wound dressing.

Radiation-Induced Stable Radicals in Calcium Phosphates: Results of Multifrequency EPR, EDNMR, ESEEM, and ENDOR Studies

Fadis F. Murzakhanov et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of a study on radiation-induced defects in various synthetic calcium phosphate (CP) powder materials using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Various experimental approaches such as ELDOR-detected NMR, electron spin echo envelope modulation, and electron-nuclear double resonance were shown to be useful in analyzing the electron-nuclear interactions of CP powders. The experimental techniques allowed for the determination of quadrupole interactions, analysis of nuclear environments, and estimation of structural positions of radiation-induced centers in crystal matrices.
