A Comparative Study on Heavy Metal Removal from CCA-Treated Wood Waste by Yarrowia lipolytica: Effects of Metal Stress

Dan Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Yarrowia lipolytica on the bioremediation of CCA-treated wood wastes. The results showed that the yeast strains remained on the wood surface after bioremediation and changed in morphology due to copper stress. The study also demonstrated that it is feasible to remove heavy metals from CCA-treated wood using Y. lipolytica without damaging the wood structure, especially with copper-induced Y. lipolytica.

Platforms to accelerate biomanufacturing of enzyme and probiotic animal feed supplements: discovery considerations and manufacturing implications

Robert E. Speight et al.

Summary: Probiotics and enzymes play an important role in the global livestock feed supplement market, contributing to animal health and productivity. However, there are challenges for new players in developing and commercializing improved feed supplements. New pathways to market, including rapid discovery, production, and testing feedback loops, need to be established to overcome these challenges.

Cleaner degreasing of sheepskins by the Yarrowia lipolytica LIP2 lipase as a chemical-free alternative in the leather industry

Emna Moujehed et al.

Summary: The study showed that using LIP2 lipase from Yarrowia lipolytica (YLLIP2) can effectively degrease sheepskins, reducing the need for harmful chemicals in the leather industry. The enzymatic treatment produced higher quality leather compared to chemical treatment, with cleaner effluent physicochemical parameters. This opens up new possibilities for a more efficient and environmentally friendly approach in leather production.

Screening for a more sustainable solution for decolorization of dyes and textile effluents using Candida and Yarrowia spp.

Marta Mendes et al.

Summary: This study tested the ability of three yeast strains isolated from wastewater treatment plants to decolorize textile dyes and evaluated their enzyme production. The results showed that Y. lipolytica and C. pseudoglaebosa had the best decolorization effect on reactive dyes and simulated effluents. These yeasts are potential biotechnological tools for dye degradation in textile wastewaters, contributing to circular economy and eco sustainability in the water sector.

A green approach for modification and functionalization of wool fabric using bio- and nano-technologies

Nabil A. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: In this study, a green and sustainable strategy for eco-friendly surface modification of wool structure was proposed. Biosynthesized kerationlytic proteases were used for surface modification, followed by functionalization with environmentally friendly substances to provide durable antibacterial and UV-protection properties. Experimental results revealed that the developed green wool fabrics exhibited outstanding durable antibacterial activity and UV-blocking ability, making them suitable for a wide range of sustainable protective textiles.

Revisiting amino acid analyses for bioadhesives including a direct comparison of tick attachment cement (Dermacentor marginatus) and barnacle cement (Lepas anatifera)

Benedikt Engel et al.

Summary: This study focused on the amino acid composition of attachment cements from ticks and barnacles, revealing significant differences in amino acid presence and concentration between the two bio-adhesives, suggesting different attachment mechanisms. The results indicate that published amino acid analysis of barnacle cement may have underestimated/overestimated certain amino acids, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
